Non cranking, no warning lights with ignition on
« on: November 19, 2022, 02:15:55 PM »
After about 8 years since I sold my Bis I’ve just bought a 126P locally. It’s sat for a month or so in our lovely soggy autumn.
So I’m attempting to breath life back into it. After a new battery, cleaning earths (3 at the front and the big engine strap) I’ve managed to get lights, wipers and indicators working.

But no warning lights with ignition on and no cranking (centre lever type)
One of the relays is clicking, and I have 12v switching on stage 2 of ignition so I’m not sure if it’s the switch messing around or the cluster itself as the back of it is a little corroded where the diode sits.

Any pointers or insight would be gratefully appreciated. There’s 12V to the starter on the fat wire and I ran an extra earth to the block just to sure from the battery.

But I think it’s related to no warning lights on the dash…

Others may have better suggestions and it’s not easy to diagnose from your description but I think I may have had something similar and I fixed it by squirting a lot of WD40 into the ignition key hole and turning the key backwards and forwards about 100 times. I don’t really know why it fixed it but it did!

It should crank on the lever even if the ignition is off so I'd look into starter wiring and battery connections.

I’ll have another play in the next day or two and thanks for the replies. It’s about 7 miles from my house and was just trying to avoid getting it recovered
If anyone has any images of the back of their fuse board I’d like to compare them just to make sure it’s not been fiddled with.
Am I right in thinking charge light and oil warning light should illuminate with ignition on?

Yes, you should have the dash lights with ignition on.

Have you got a haynes manual?

There are plenty of wiring diagrams on there

May well be a wise investment.

I’m currently working off this and the wiring seems to mostly tally up:

Well there’s progress, of sorts.
I tried the WD ignition switch trick and it has worked 🙏
But still no starter engaging off the cable.
I have 12V off the battery reaching the starter and I’ve tried cleaning where the lever contacts, and tickling with the monkey stick but I think the starter has died.

It lives again. The starter switch had seized and was also causing a dead short, the points needed resetting and the timing. It runs but a bit fluffy so will move onto a carb clean.
Thanks for the inputs.

Well done! Always remeber that when you fix a Fiat there is usually more than one thing that needs fixing!
