1990 126 Bis - exhaust box + assoc hoses .

(1/2) > >>

PeteB:
Hi - Just joined the forum having just bought the car .

So , on looking at (and removing) the existing silencer I noticed that two reinforced hoses are fitted , one going from the exh manifold to the air filter box , the other going from the opposite side of the manifold “tube” to the rear quarter of the car and simply venting to atmosphere .
The air filter box has a mechanical flap (hand operated) to either allow air to enter or not .

My thought is that this hose arrangement is some firm of vacuum system , but am struggling with “why” !

Also , I see that a replacement  “Sport” exhaust doesn’t have this arrangement on the silencer - so presumably it isn’t really necessary (?)

Would like to hear from anyone who could shed some light on this - have attached some pics .

Many thanks !

Hi
I don't know for certain (my car is air cooled) but that sounds like a system for feeding warmed air to the carb in cold weather to prevent the carb from icing up.

Later.......
I've just been looking at the parts catalogue in the Subscribers section ...

the reinforced hose which you say is vented to the atmosphere is the air inlet
the air travels along that tube and then passes over the hot exhaust manifold
the heated air passes to the air filter box along the 2nd reinforced tube you mention
The flap is for you to bypass the exhaust heated air and send "normal" air to the filter.
You'll only need the heated air on cold/wet days - which is when I guess you won't be driving your 126 anyway !!

Hi John

aha ! that makes sense .

So , unless I'm using the car in really cold weather (unlikely ...) I can replace the silencer etc with a "Sports Exhaust" with no impact on any performance / starting .

Really appreciate your response and didn't realise there is a Parts Catalogue on this site !

Cheers
