Advice On Adjusting Wheel Bearings

Today I took both the front wheels off and greased up the king pins with a grease gun on my Fiat 126 Bis.
I wobbled the hub with my hands and it didn't move a single bit, So I put the wheels back on and tried to wobble it again with the wheels on and they had some play in them.
Is this just that the bearings need adjusting? If so is there any advice on how to adjust the bearings and to what setting ( How do I know when they are adjusted Right ).
Also I tried greaseing my king pins on my buggy but the grease just came out the end and didn't go through the nipple ( I checked and the gun was on the nipple properly ) Does this mean that the nipple is blocked or is it something else?
Also forgot to add. When I dump the clutch there is a massive clunking sound from the engine/Gearbox.
Does anyone know what this could be and is it a common fault?
Any advice would be much apprieciated.

your sure the clunking sound is not from the exhaust? quite common for it to knock when driving as when you change gear and rev the engine moves. At the moment the exhaust on my gti is knocking as the short pipe is too long. When was it last reaplced?

Also like maxlee says, check your mounts.

I don't think it's the exhaust. I have tightened the gearbox mounts and it seems to be alright at the minute.

I can only speak about aircoolers, but I think the front end is pretty much the same - YOU'LL NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK.

To check what is at fault, the king pin will be at fault if the wobble is most obvious when grabbing the wheel top and bottom and trying to wobble it up and down. The if its anything to do with the bearing, the wheel will wobble which ever way you try it. Also have a look under while wobbling to be sure its not the steering or suspension. Any wobble will be more noticable with the wheel on due to the extra weight and leverage.

The hub nut should be tightened to 5lb. This is then checked with a feeler gauge  and there should be a gap (endfloat) between the hub and the nut of between 0.025 and 0.1mm. The nut is staked (locked using a punch). It is as likely to be worn bearings - you can normally hear a rumble when you spin the wheel if they are worn.

If the endfloat is too wide, then its as well  to buy a new nut as the staking may be weak if its very near to a previous staking. The right hand nut has a left hand thread.

If its the bearings, its straightforward to replace once you get the old ones out.

Remember this is aircooler details so check in your manual for BIS to be sure.

Also have that clunk on my 500 - I am suspecting tired gearbox mounts and the box is slightly too low (raising the exhaust). I'll let you know if that fixes the problem for me - though the BIS box is mounted differently - don't know if you can adjust the height.
