The sun came out so I had another look at the steering column, The steering lock had been damaged, so was stopping the actual shaft from turning.

It looks like they used a lot of force to cause so much damage.

Out with the trusty angle grinder and the damaged part is removed. Works OK but I will no longer have a steering lock.

Next job to straighten the bracket and weld back in place.

I have had time 'and weather' to get on with Beryl again.

Finished removing all the 'tar' sound insulation. 12KG!!!! removed. Interior the sprayed with underseal.

The bracket straightened, drilled and painted. Dashboard was worse than I thought but straightened and repaired.

Tar stuff, mmmmm , they (FIAT), even used it in the 500`s, . It is there for reducing the "drumming"  effect , as it has sound insulating properties, you may find its louder in the cabin after its removal, and yes it can hold a film of water but does`nt absorb the damp as fabric insulant tends to. I shall be using some of these tar mats as they are quite good. Mike.
All things Italian.

Once the car is mobile, I have been offered the use of a Portapower. I plan on using the long poles/rods and simply pushing both sides out at the same time.  :- ??? ::)

Re the tar, I had a lot of water trapped under it, it has bubbled in a few places. I will try it and see how it goes with just the mats, if not I will need to buy Dynomat.

I doubt it's normally used on submersibles.
I am fairly certain you will need something to replace it, have a good look around though, there are so many different products out there.
