1983 UK air-cooled 126, only 20k miles, very original
« on: October 11, 2018, 10:28:30 AM »
Hi folks,

I am very reluctantly putting my 126 up for sale - sadly I need to raise some funds to complete my 900T van project (which needs a replacement engine and a respray).

Some of you already know the car well. It has just ticked over 20,000 miles (with service history to prove this is genuine). I am the third owner, the second keeper only had the car for a few months before I bought it over seven years ago and the original owner was an elderly lady from Liverpool who bought the car new in early 1983 from Altcar Autos in Formby (a Fiat dealer which has long since closed).

The car is very original and unrestored.  There is the odd scratch and small mark to the paintwork as you’d expect after 35 years but overall the condition is excellent - I have always kept the car in a garage, as did the original owner.

Over the years I have done all the basic servicing myself but four or five years ago I took it to Proietti for a new steering rack and some other jobs.  It has had various new parts, include a new Weber carb (last year), new headlights, new tyres etc.

Overall, it’s a real time warp - the spare wheel looks to be unused (and still has the original Michelin X tyre), the dealer sticker and number plates are still fitted, I have the original dealer tax disc, key ring and even the original purchase invoice!

Of course, there are always a few jobs left to do - the headlining had sagged badly when I got the car so I removed it and have been using it like that ever since, although I do have a brand new headliner and some correct beige cloth which I just haven’t got around to fitting.  I also have a stock of spare parts which I am including in the sale (service items, new brake drums, new petrol tank, new exhaust and various other bits and bobs).

It’s been difficult trying to work out what I should ask for the car.  There haven’t been many UK RHD aircooleds on the market but prices do seem to have risen and while the car certainly isn’t concors standard, it must be one of the best unrestored 126s out there.  I hope you won’t think I’m being greedy if I say £4,250 ono.  It is MOTed until July 2019.

I’ll take some better pictures over the next few days but here are a few for starters.

Thanks for reading this far!

Mike

Lovely car this one, it must have been a tough decision putting it up for sale. I hope it goes to a good home.
Good luck with the sale.  :thumbup

And the front boot

The black stuff you can see around the boot hinges etc is the original rustproofing, as per the sticker in the rear window!

I’m afraid so - we need the cash but hopefully the 900T will be back on the road soon...

Hi Mike,

Hopefully your'll get a good price for it at auction, its such a nice car.

Spotted your car in this youtube video, I came across the other day. Skip to about 4min 30secs and 5min 50sec.

How did it go with the auction Mike? Did the 126 sell?

Hi Ladisav - the truth is that I don’t know!

They haven’t put the results on-line yet and I’m still waiting for someone at ACA to get back to me...

Also thanks Max for the video links - there’s a very good resto thread about that 900T on the Autopooe forum.

Talking of 900Ts, I’m happy to report that mine is running nicely again after helicoiling the head for the rocker gear studs (two of which had stripped the thread in the head) and sealing an air leak at the base of the carb.  Got a few more small jobs to do and then it’ll be ready for it’s second (and final?) MOT and back on the road. Still haven’t diagnosed what caused it to overheat in the summer so will run it back in gently...

Just heard back from the auctioneers - it sold for £3,200 net (not including buyer’s premium).

I’d hoped for perhaps a bit more but it was a smooth and easy process - sad to see it go but now can focus on the 900T.

The sale didn’t include any of my spare parts so will put those up on here later on this week. There are a few new old stock goodies...
