Difficulty Selecting 3rd gear
chrisrhodesinlbz:
Hello, I hope that you can give me some advice?
I have a 1988 BIS that I've had for about 10 years.
Engine-wise it's running better than its ever done, but I've recently noticed the clutch is just beginning to slip. Most recently I haven't been able to change from 2nd gear to 3rd on the move.
I've adjusted the cable, but it hasn't made any difference. 4th to 3rd is fine, it's just 2nd to 3rd doesn't seem to want to go. I go from 1 > 2 > 4 > 3.
I probably need a new clutch, but could there be other gearbox problems with the 2nd to 3rd difficulty?
Thanks very much!
Chris
ChrisRLewis:
If the clutch is slipping and you have tried to adjust the clutch with no success, the chances are you will need a new clutch :(
Pete126:
Check the gearbox mounts, If there knackered that can be one of the causes but that won't solve a slipping clutch :$

Hello
I've taken it to a local garage and they are keeping it to check it out. I think I'll need a new clutch.
Pete's comments about the gearbox mounts rang a bell, as in 2016 I had an advisory on the MOT of 'gearbox bushes perished'. I asked at the time what that meant and the person at the garage didn't know. Thinking now that that must be same thing as gearbox mounts and perhaps the gearbox is not sitting right or moving about a bit, hence the selection problems.
I'm expecting quite a bill anyway, although once you've spent quite a lot of money keeping an old car going, it's quite hard to stop...not much else left to go wrong now.
I'll report back for future reference.
Thanks!
Chris

I think that the gearbox bushes are different to the gearbox mounts, they don’t cost much to buy, are relatively easy to fit and make a big difference. :thumbup
