Difficulty Selecting 3rd gear
« on: July 04, 2018, 07:54:42 PM »
Hello, I hope that you can give me some advice?

I have a 1988 BIS that I've had for about 10 years.

Engine-wise it's running better than its ever done, but I've recently noticed the clutch is just beginning to slip. Most recently I haven't been able to change from 2nd gear to 3rd on the move.

I've adjusted the cable, but it hasn't made any difference. 4th to 3rd is fine, it's just 2nd to 3rd doesn't seem to want to go. I go from 1 > 2 > 4 > 3.

I probably need a new clutch, but could there be other gearbox problems with the 2nd to 3rd difficulty?

Thanks very much!

Chris

If the clutch is slipping and you have tried to adjust the clutch with no success, the chances are you will need a new clutch :(

Check the gearbox mounts, If there knackered that can be one of the causes but that won't solve a slipping clutch  :$

Hello

I've taken it to a local garage and they are keeping it to check it out. I think I'll need a new clutch.

Pete's comments about the gearbox mounts rang a bell, as in 2016 I had an advisory on the MOT of 'gearbox bushes perished'. I asked at the time what that meant and the person at the garage didn't know. Thinking now that that must be same thing as gearbox mounts and perhaps the gearbox is not sitting right or moving about a bit, hence the selection problems.

I'm expecting quite a bill anyway, although once you've spent quite a lot of money keeping an old car going, it's quite hard to stop...not much else left to go wrong now.

I'll report back for future reference.

Thanks!

Chris

I think that the gearbox bushes are different to the gearbox mounts, they don’t cost much to buy, are relatively easy to fit and make a big difference.  :thumbup

Maybe worth checking the flexible coupling linkage for slack bolts or general wear.

If it comes down to the gearbox and anything is broken inside I have lots of spare bits here in Chesham, not too far away from you  :)

What’s the going rate for a BIS gearbox that works? I’ve not gone one but have half a half chance of getting a couple!

Thanks for all your help!

It's been a bit of a slow process, as car has been with garage for a while.

The clutch was definitely slipping so garage said first thing was to replace that. Had a bit of difficulty purchasing from Ricambio, as payment was taken online, but order not generated, now sorted.  Clutch is with garage to fit.

Garage is going to see if this solves the problem.

Thanks to everyone!

Chris

Just an update from the garage...been in 3 weeks now, but they deal with it as an when.

Replacement clutch wasn't easy to fit. Could not access normally as was seized and had to remove the engine instead and go in from the other end.

Gearbox oil was full of bits of metal, further investigation necessary...

Sorry for never-ending thread, but hope it might be useful to forum users in future, for reference. Car is 1988 BIS with low miles, well maintained over years, that rapidly developed increasing clutch slip and then 3rd gear selection problem.

Just to update, I got the Fiat back.

Gearbox was sent away to be re-conditioned (£335 + VAT). New clutch fitted. The garage fashioned their own gearbox mounts. There were various components changed, seals, linkages etc. and a lot of labour to get the gearbox/engine out due to seized bolts.

All sorted now but at a cost! There were other bits too, but gearbox/clutch problem amounted to about £1000 with VAT.

Hopefully car will be good for years to come, or at least the gearbox! The gear change is totally different now, so much more slick, and the drive much quieter.

Best wishes

Chris
