Clonking
« on: January 14, 2018, 06:44:31 PM »
Am I right in thinking if that if you're clonking over bumps and ridges it's likely to be replacement shock absorbers, or something else? Difficult I know to diagnose on line. My 126 Bis wheels are "knocking" when they go up and down. Just looking at new shocks from ricambo. Thanks

It could well be other factors too not just shocks. It could be the kingpins or a bush in the leaf Spring. A bounce test should tell f the shocks are knackered. After that the best thing to do is whip the wheels off and with a lever have a good prod around. You can identify if it's the kingpins by gripping the top and bottom of the wheel and wiggling it to see if there's any play. Anything more than slight means they are duff. Leaf Spring bushes are located at the bottom of the hub if you get a lever and lever down. There should be no movement.

Ok thank you that’s very helpful. I’ll get it up on ramps this week. It sounds like the “chassis” has come loose from the bodywork a bit like a bogey underneath a railway carriage

Have a look at your leaf Spring mounts while your down there. That bolts straight to the body, if that's insecure it could sound like something clonking away underneath

Excellent. Thanks again. Will report back. Hope it isn’t expensive to fix.

Where is the noise coming from the front or the back of the car?
If it's the front it's most likely the kingpins as Gadge suggested.
If it is from the rear it could be the drive shaft couplings.

Coming from both front and back. Front is definitely the wheels going up and down but the back I wondered if it could be an engine mount - which would make sense if it's the driveshaft couplings. Interested to find out.

I did do the kingpins on this when I had it... but it's been took apart for its paint job So I can't really say... the rear engine mount may not be installed correctly? Gearbox and engine pretty much hang and swing with their factory mounts it seems :D. Are all bump stops in place? I seem to remember doing the driveshaft couplings too.
