I'm fairly sure that tyre is the only new 135/70 R13 you can buy nowadays. All others I've seen are unused old stock or part-worn.

And even then, only online tyre specialists such as MyTyres and Oponeo sell our size.

Whilst it's true that the Hankook is the only one readily available in that precise size, there are plenty of other tyres available in sizes that give an acceptable rolling radius with a different profile of tyre. Obviously a different profile will change the handling slightly, and the speedo reading, slightly, but in a car like the Bis with relatively modest performance it's most unlikely imho that any use other than on the racetrack will detect these differences.

AIUI the standard bis rim is 5.5J x 13. Using the rim calculator here: http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/tyre-size-for-rim-size-width-calculator

you can get a list of 21 different tyre sizes that *could* in theory be fitted to that rim. Not all possible sizes will actually be manufactured, of course, and some that are manufactured may be inappropriate for various reasons. But that still leaves plenty of options.

For example, if you want to keep to a fairly narrow tyre to minimise scrubbing issues, go for 165. Then choose a low profile to keep the rolling radius close to original, say 55. Then a 165/55 R13 tyre will be 512mm OD compared to 519mm for the original. This is within the calibration error of the speedo, 2.5%, so would be fine to use. And if you google this tyre size you'll find  Goodyear, Nankang, Falken and a load more besides.

I just picked one alternative size to see what the options are, but it won't take you for ever to work systematically through all the options to see what's the best choice.  Best starting point is to just google each size in turn and eliminate those that are not readiy available. Then go back through the others and find the rolling diameter closest to 519mm. Then choose the narrowest of those still left in your list, to minimise fit issues.

When you get the answer, post it here so others can benefit from your efforts  ;)

I have got a full set of Bis alloys here already fitted with the correct size tyres. They are for sale but a guy has said he wants them but has not paid yet. If anyone is interested I can check to see if the guy still wants them  :)

the standard bis rim is 5.5J x 13

Just for future reference, or for anyone doing some searching/research on this topic, the standard BIS rim is actually 4B x 13

Yes I second this and I must have missed the earlier post as I still have the Bis alloys complete with tyres  :)

Hi Dave, what alloy wheels are they and what are the tyres.
Hope to see you at the lunch meeting at the end of the month.

Point of order, Mr Chairman: what I *actually* posted was "AIUI" - "As I Understand It" - the standard bis rim, etc etc. It was not a definitive assertion, merely an example to show how knowing a rim size the calculator referenced could be used to find out what tyre size options might exist for fitting to that rim.

I cannot recall now where I got that size from, but obviously I had some doubt about it which led me to qualify my statement.

I thank Xylaquin for correcting the specific detail  :)

heh, I wasn't meaning to call you out... just making sure that anyone whose researching this in the future gets the right details in the end. 0:-)

My steel wheels are in need of refurbishment, but I've been quoted £200... so I reckoned it might be cheaper just to buy new ones. Then I discovered nobody makes 4x98 4x13 steel wheels.

£200 does sound a lot, depending on what is being done? Had mine sandblasted for £13 each and they came up like new, not sure how much the painting cost as they were done as part of another job but having watched them being done, I'm sure it can't have cost that much as it did not take too long!

Wheel refurbishment is not something that lends itself to automation to any great extent, so the cost of 4 wheels is more or less four times the cost of one. In my area, Sussex, £40-60/wheel is about the going rate, and if you think about what's involved (and sand blasting is just one of several stages) that seems like a fair price to me. Smaller garage rates are around £50-60/hour in this area, so you're looking at an hour's work for each wheel, including materials and removing and refitting tyres. Four wheels for £200 may not be the cheapest, but I doubt it's a rip off.

As for "just buying new ones", even if they were available in your size they wouldn't be significantly cheaper. The tyre alone would be around £30 for a decent one. So you use the old tyres - that's (in my area) £12 to remove from one rim and another £12 to fit to a new one. Plus the cost of the new rim....   it all adds up, no matter which way you do it. And given it's for your pride and joy, do you really want the very cheapest job you can get anyway ?

I know that  ;D  And you are absolutely right to get the correct information on record. The Forum wouldn't be much use if it was full of misleading information.
