Front & rear disc brake conversion?
« on: September 03, 2016, 02:46:44 AM »
I'm going to need to update my brakes regardless so I'm thinking why not just convert them to discs, Why not right?  :$

All I really know is I need the adapter plates of Ebay & callipers ether from a Seicento or a Punto. That's all I really know at this stage...

Can someone share some knowledge on this topic please?  ???

I can save you a couple of pounds on the front disc brake adapter plates as I still have a few pairs left from the last batch I had made. They are a bit nicer than the fairly agricultural ones you see on ebay. I will post within the UK for £25  :)

A bigger master cylinder would also be good to compensate for the extra fluid going into the caliper (I found the standard 126 one quite spongy) also as a cheaper and simpler way of upgrading the rears instead of using calipers try fitting front wheel cylinders on the rear drums. Not a lot of people know that the front wheel cylinders on 126's although very similar to the rears are acually bigger so a greater force is acted on them. I have these above set ups on my car and I have to say the best mod ever!! Stopping is phenomenally better over the drum set up.

Northern Ireland is not a problem as you will have a UK postcode. If you do a search in the tuning section in 2010 I posted a list of all the parts you need for the front conversion along with instructions on how to do it.  :)

Brilliant uncle! Keep them plates and I'll buy them in the next week when I'm ordering all my parts. I'm going to be a lazy get and ask you to link me to that post hahaha.

Ralph do you have a post on that mod?

Nathan, I take it your referring to the barcheta handle conversion. Well the answer is not at this time, I have been trying to get the mechanism to fit and work, there are a few options but I am looking for the simplist and easiest way. Once I have it sorted I will post how it all fits together. This isn't difficult its I just don't have enough free time to push this forward just now.

I don't really have a post for it but it's a simple and easy mod as all you are doing is swapping the parts over. The master cylinder is a straight swap and easy enough to do as it's just two 13mm bolts and the brake pipe unions. The rear wheel cylinders are even easier again just a straight swap with 126 front ones.

Obviously you'll have to make sure that what you have bought are the right ones. The front wheel cylinders are a bit thicker to look at than the rears so it's easy to see. I know this mod works as I accidentally fitted one on the rear by mistake and it was picked up by the mot tester as one side had much more braking efficiency than the other.

The master cylinder is not so easy to spot as the Uno and 126 one look identical so you'll need to study part numbers and such. I bought mine from a place that had the tech spec of it so I was able to see that the part had a piston bore of 20.5mm so knew it was the one that I wanted.

Btw what year is yours? I'm basing this on a late 80's water cooled version not sure if this would apply to an early air cooled one?
