turbocharger?
« on: December 27, 2005, 01:12:40 AM »
you may think this is a daft question, i was thinking about this the other day, but why hasnt a super mechanic in poland fitted a turbo to their 126 yet??  ive never seen one.

i know the fuel pump etc probably would be able to keep up, but am i right in thinking that turbos can be used on cars with carbs?

You could turbo one, you would need to find a very small turbo tho. Probably one off a 600cc japanese car.

You can use a carb, Wouldent use the standard one tho :) use an electric fuel pump aswell

The main problem i see in it is the cooling system. Obviously aircooled isnt the best to start with and not easy to uprate and the BIS is way too unrelyable. If it blows head gaskets at standard level of tune its not going to last 5mins with a turbo!

Fitting one would be easy but there are relyability issues!

doubt the aircooled engine would handle it either. werent Porsche 911 turbos aircooled? certainly the good old gearbox and driveshafts would die too!
1987 Fiat 126 FSM, alloys, clear lights, Polish tat accessories... love it!

What about a Smart car turbo, or even a Reliant Robin Turbo?

www.monkeyrun.co.uk The owner of the website has built a 120cc Honda Dax, and has fitted a lawn mower Turbo.

wow, loads of info on that one!!! that site is nice to learn from!! That bike is using a 500 carb!

could you imagine if a small turbo was manufactuired for a 126, even if it was a very small one, the smaller the faster acceleration and bigger the turbo the high top speed you can gain.

all sounds very nice but Barry & Slater are right, far to un reliable at present, the porsches used aircooled engine untill mid 80's i believe. Interesting subject though.

I want to have a go now!

i was thinking of making some alloy cylinder barrels for a 650 engine, like the porkas have. Its not very difficult and you could increse the amount of fins or something to make them run a bit cooler.

My dad gets alot of work from a guy who builds aircooled porka motors and i keep comparing the bits with a fiat motor. They are a very simlar design

hi,i know it sounds cruel and defeats the object, but it would be 10 times easier to ditch the engine and get another(there are ways and means to fit one)i always thought that you needed a low compression engine ,and a decent cooling system.other wise melt down would happen.

Your probably right but it kinda takes the fun out of it relly! :P

Your right about compression but when i think about it 126s had a low compession engine to start with (early ones even lower!!) so you would probably get away with it. Even if it becomes an issue its easy to lower it a bit more with a little grinding of the head.

lol, wouldnt early low compression ones melt down.they are only air cooled.wouldnt they need oil coolers, intercoolers and at least a very good air circulation?

suppose it would depend on how much boost you gave it.

Supercharging may be a more sensible option.

I remember reading an arlicle a few years ago about a guy turbo charging a 2cv.The first one went on fire(the standard one's did'nt need any help in that department I know this from cruel experience)but the second one went like the scalded pussy.Another alternative was to fit the Citroen gs engine four cylinders and 1200cc fits straight in (more or less) :D

I'm surprised at you Chris, I have a turbo engine well underway (I had told you about it previously)
When you come on msn I'll forward you some pics with a proper explanation of all the pitfalls and problems and how I have got around them
