My £100 aircooled needs TLC !!!! Help ???
« on: September 17, 2006, 09:56:04 PM »
Hi guy's.

Well I'v had my wee car on the road a few weeks now and I still cant stop smiling as I'm driving it. It's BRRRILLLIAAANTT fun.

I'v had a bit of bother with idiots moving it and breaking off the tail pipe but since I installed my hi teck security I've had no more bother.
( I'v got a wheel clamp and a dummy security cammera trained on it from the bed room window with a warning sticker in the car.)

I'm having a bit of bother with the car and hope you wise lot can give me a few pointers.

The other day the battery light started comming on, faint at first, then a few days after it died compleatly. I took the battery out and left it charging in the house for a day. I put it back in the car and it started no bother but the battery warning light stays on.

I had a look at the altonater belt and it may be a bit slack but have not had time to take it apart to see if the rings to alter the tension are there or not.

Could it be that the altonater is knackered ??

The whole engine could do with a strip and clean but I'm reluctant to take it to a garage as they may not be familiar with the car and tend to screw you over any way when they see you are female. I once got charged for tracking for front and REAR wheels !!!that was the first and last time I took my car to that garage.( AMS in Paignton, devon) And NO, I didnt pay the bill untill they ammended it.

I dont know if anybody in the club is near to doncaster but I would love to compair the engine to another aircooled. Mine has a multitude if wires on crockadile clips that dont apear to be serving any purpous, some come from the starter moter and the other end is clipped to the tail light wires on the insulated cuvering. Very strange !!

There is a guy on ebay offering to import parts so I sent him a question as I need an exhaust, air filter (not one at all in the drum) and a oil filter.

This is the ebay link.

Thanks again to you all.

Hi Issy. sounds like the diodes or rectifier block in the alternator, checkout the prices at somewhere like partco or andrew pages before going to the specialists, i got a new exhaust for my bis for less than 45 quid from my local (independant) motor shop. check them out for for a recondition alternator.

pete,i think issys is an a/cooled,if so issy, the drive belt is crucial to the engine,it drives both alternator and fan,id check that first, but it does sound like diode etc failure tho........(hint to the unwary, never charge the battery while connected, that can blow the diodes too) a/c owners should ALWAYS have spare belt and 10mm spanner on board.....if it breaks you cannot just get home, you will cook the motor.................the spacers are there somwhere issy, either inside the pully or outside behind the 3 pully nuts.

i see your after an oil filter?,both bis and a/c have centrifugal ones on the end of the crankshaft pully, just strip and clean out.

good luck

thanks for the advise guy's.
I think I will best just get a few new bits for it then there is no worring.
I got a reply from that guy on ebay who can get all 126 and 500 bits.
this was his prices. seam pretty good to me but maybe you know better ???

Hi
Air cooled is better than bis bcs bis is more complicated.
Fiat 126p haven't got oil filter so you must change oil oft like in instruction and never put good one bcs if is to liquid you can have many lakes bcs it can penetrare all sediments.
-Full Exhaust 19 Pounds
-Air filter 2 P
-Altonater belt 2 P
-Altonater 10 pounds (2nd hand)
I must check for new but it can be 30-50P.
THIS ARE PRICES IN POLAND PLUS POSTAGE.
POSTAGE CAN BE CLOSE TO 30 POUNDS.
You may need short wiper blades bcs I newer seen them in UK (or all wipers aprox 3 pounds).
Any questions just wait for answer.

Check it out and see what you think.

I'll take the belt off on my next day off and see whats there in way of tension ring things !!
Thanks again for all your help.
