I've never had a 126. Second hand car prices have been sky-high during summer so i won't have overheating problems when i buy a 126. :(

The group 2 rally cars never had the lid open, they would have if it helped

Not needed doesn't mean not better. :) They were to lazy to cut the upper half :P If in 500 it's way better what's the difference in 126!? Easy to prove with an accurate oil temperature gauge. If you gain 5*C less - that's good enough. Let say if running at 60mph for long. The normal is 90-110*C, critical 120*C. The oil cooler makes about 20*C lower temperature.

This is the Gr2 replica. It's a bit strange if we got the air filter like this and the lid closed... (David Vizard would say "not good") ;D So, not everything we see is the best.



For rally the open hood means mess in the engine room, maybe a good reason to keep it closed.

Surely on the car shown, having the missing heat shield in place and wrapping the exhuast would have more effect.

Improvements on the cheap are always welcome. Wrapping the exhaust sounds promising for instance. When i buy a 126 i will be looking for ways of improving airflow and other means to stretch dhe distance between cooling breaks. Everyone here says every 100 to 200kms car needs a break to cool some. Maybe it's due to climate here or bad maintenance. I've had lots of food for thought here in this topic.

You could always fit an oil cooler. Not sure how, but someone will know, they normally come off of the oil filter mounting, but the 126 doesn't have that type of oil filter.
You might be best asking smallcox, the guy is a 126 genius.

When i lay my hands on an oilpan i'll try to figure out a way to fit some aluminium cooler which is commonly used for electronic amplifiers etc. If the base of the oil pan is straight or can be straightened or there is sufficiently large straight area it may work. Ä°mporting ready-made one is out of sight for now.

There is also another saying there: first thing first. Need to buy a 126.

Reading this has opened my eyes as to why my 500 died.  :o I was unaware these engines needed a cooldown period after a while. I tried going from New Orleans to Pensacola (4 hours at 70-75mph) in one shot not even thinking about this. In front engine cars, keeping the air flow is paramount. In the rear engines, you don't have that same amount. Good thing this didn't happen to both my cars... Thanks for the eye opener!

4h at 75... :o you must be jokin :$ 75mph/120kmh is a good topspeed, but... 65mph/105kmh is pretty OK and that's why the factory rates it as a max. speed at 4800 rpm (a little bit more than the max.power at 4500rpm).

They say: permanent speed of 90kmh/56mph is not a problem for the 126, in spite of the small engine...

Also: you can shift gears at 5300-5600rpm when accelerating...

Well, 5500rpm is kind of ceiling or about 75mph/120kmh, but have mercy  ??? 8)

Something more, you say 500... All models except 500R (8/39 like in 126 all models incl. 600cc) got final drive 8/41. Imagine the rpm at 75mph/120kmh if it can reach em at all, no matter what the clock says.

"Cooling down period" means that we are tormenting the machine or something inside is going wrong - bad mixture, ignition, oil, belt, thermostat... Climbing mountain road at high gear and low rpm... So what means to stop every 50-100-200km, and how to know when exactly? This is good only for the tin in the engine room, so the rubber gasket of the rear window doesn't convert to a bubble gum :$ Insulating the engine bay is also a good step, cos in a certain moment the walls are just a heat accumulator... ;) That's how the whole theme started - the open lid  :)

Emin, the oil pan is air-cooled as well :) So no alu-radiators will be worth. Well, here is good to say that is good to make sure that the gap in the bottom of the sump is clean and not filled of oil-dusty mess or smashed... Bigger displacement 3.5-4l aluminum pan is other thing.
