Title: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: JonW126 on April 13, 2013, 06:17:46 PM
Today, I waxed and polished the 126 and changed the petrol filter as I noticed it was showing signs of debris in the filter on the underneath ...... Shockingly mucky once I got it off ..... Yuk !

Get a spare fuel filter, the tanks rust inside but still look fine outside. A new tank isn't much more than the fluid to coat the inside of the tank with. And you have to remove the tank to seal it anyway.

To access the tank do I just need to just put the rear on ramps ???

Is there a step by step guide on here anywhere b any chance ????

Pretty strait forward make sure there is no fuel in it, on to the ramps

Take the two hoses of the pump

And two more hose clips, one on the filler and one on the breather

Three nuts to hold the tank on

Anyone have a full list of the parts that are needed for this job and a suggestion where to get them all ?

Assume it'll be new tank, new tank neck rubber and new hoses... how many metres ???

I got my tank through axle gerstl, just fuel line (6mm I think), tank and sender gasket should be all you need. Check 126 fan and axle gerstl to see which is cheapest.
The hardest bit was reattaching the filler and breather pipes, found out after that you get better access through the interior side panel.

Drove mine today - as it is my main (and only!) car :P

But recently blown up the tyres, checked the brake fluid, put on a dust cap that had been nicked, and inspected my bodywork. Tomorrow I'm driving back to Uni which is a 70 mile trip, so will top up the water. Can't wait for a relaxing Sunday drive, the weather forecast looks good!

Drove car then removed drivers seat & driver's side carpet. Removed seat covers and put in washing machine along with carpet. Cleaned and checked out floor well. Pumped two full spray cans of Waxoil into driver's side sill and the O/S front wing via the small holes that are used to keep the bonnet seal in place. Switched the passenger side seat over to driver's side. You just have to remove the sprung catch that allows the seat to be tilted and move it to the other side of the seat frame. Well worth swopping seat positions if you have a more worn driver's seat  :)
Going to try and get the seat cover repaired then refit on passenger side.

Fired her up, told her we were not going to a car show, drove around the neighborhood and, once again, refused to stop for questions when the guys who constantly fix/beef up their Civics begged me to let them see the car.  Put the car back in the garage and inspected the engine to make sure nothing bad happened, like the usual blown valve cover gasket.

Replaced all Plastic Head screws with new ones supplied by 'Slovakia 126 fan' in all the front and rear light lenses.

Not the best quality screws, 3 were broken on arrival and 2 broke in use - not that over tightened them or anything, I over ordered thankfully so had spares.  Majority of them were OK but quality of the 5 that broke were sub standard, so if you buy some, buy too many, just in case as its a lucky dip.

I fitted one moon disc to my spare (with no tyre) couldn't get tyres off other wheels so didn't risk drilling through them.
Also painted (with some metalflake I had spare from my old beach buggy) my oil filer cap and sat in the sunshine looking at it!!

Still trying to get a MK7 Jag out of the garage before I can get the Fiat in :(
It's been there since 1971!

Walked to car like I do every morning, like some sort of film star, got in, turned key, belted up motorway to Leeds at 70ish, picking my way through Audis, mercs, Beemers and other lesser cars and rolled into work making an understated blatant statement that the daddy has arrived!
Stand by your beds the man has just arrived, just like every other day punctually, stylishly and cool, confident that this day is mine!

Swallowed my pride (and dusted off my wallet) by taking my 126 to Proietti's this morning to get it through this year's MOT.  For the last two years I've done all the work on the car myself but replacing perished bushes on the rear shocks has defeated me (nuts seized solid) and it's probably about time that someone who actually knows what they're doing gives the car the once over...

Anyway, shelling out some cash means that I'll have even more incentive to use the car lots when I get it back!

Excellent.... Be money well spent mate.

Mine has been at a garage next to Brands Hatch called Day & Whites for the past couple of weeks getting a full health check. They have identified and resolved a few issues I wasn't aware of which is excellent news and hope to have it back put together in a week or so.

Anna on reception made me laugh the other day. The garage is located next door to a Ferrari specialists and she said "Jon your car is safe and sound". I said "I'm sure it is, it's all the Ferrari's next door hogging the limelight, I bet" and Anna's response was "NO !!! Your little red 126 seems to be getting lots of attention" lol

I'd consider a swap for the weekend though just to have a go in one !

Looking forward to getting it back and putting the alloys I've bought put onto it.

Photos will follow in due course.

Hey Tom.

It's now ready for collection ! I just got to get there, pay the bill and drive her home !

They've done 4.5 hrs work on the car, which i believe mainly consists of sorting an existing but retivately newly fitted exhaust system and replaced points and condensor plus tuning.
Additional comments to come once I've spoken to them in person and driven the car.
It was mentioned that the car needs to be driven .... 14K on the clock isn't enough to keep her sweet apparently.

When I go and collect he car I'll take a moment to have a look in the Ferrari specialists, if they welcome a 126 driver !

but I did expect it as its a usual rust spot area

Found a useful thing on the bis which is not on the aircooled, a small pipe to take water away from the corners of the screen but it still went rusty  ::)

Yesterday I popped the rocker cover off expecting mayonnaise, it was really clean so decided not to do the head gasket. put new rocker cover and inlet manifold gaskets on. Mounted and plumbed in electric fuel pump. changed the condenser and checked the points. Fixed some dodgy wiring inside the distributor and going to the distributor. Sorted out dodgy screws on rear lights, and tried a different bodge on my missing vacuum linkage pivot.
This week I plan to remount and plumb in the carb, drill hole in or remove the thermostat, change the driveshaft oil seals and one flexi coupling, grease kingpins, give the car a full gearbox and engine oil change then give it a thorough check over and book the mot.

What size tyres are on the new wheels?
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: JonW126 on May 18, 2013, 08:21:22 PM
They are fitted with 175/60/13 for the fronts and 185/60/13 for the rears but it's the alloy that was rubbing not the tyre.... Gutted to be honest that its not a simple fit and off ya go !
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: Hazey-n-Marc on May 18, 2013, 08:34:20 PM
I think they have an offset of 42.5, Deyan IYI has 13*5.5*42.5 on his. Ask him what he did.
185's are going to rub unless the offset is absolutely spot on, and even then I'm not certain.
Have you checked the clearance when the car is on the floor? The wheels do arc outwards from hanging to level.

They look like 5.5j ? What's the ET on those alloys? Spacers will sort it! If you need big ones buy hub-centric ones.

As for me, my friend towed my 126 back to my house as it's been broken at his for the past week

I`ve got some 20mm spacers and longer bolts you can borrow to see if they would work, but with those size tyres they might stick out a bit too much.

Ideal, thank you, I might take you up on that offer, would I be best driving over in the 126 with the wheels and jack etc... Or shoot over in the R, have a play about and return them ASAP ?

Is there a legal limit on how far the wheel can protrude the wheel arch ?
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: kev126 on May 18, 2013, 09:06:48 PM
Yes - the tyre has to be flush with the arch at a maximum, it can't protrude at all. Negative camber is an option to tuck it under, but as your ET is so massive it would just hit the back again. Arch extensions or to have them flared/rolled out are your options

Lots of people are running 5.5j ,so with the right spacers they should be fine. 185's are a bit wide.

So do you think it as the tyres being too big ?
I thought he alloy was rubbing because it left some dirt on the inside o he rim when I was offering it up but maybe I just caught it and assumed I was the alloy.

I only tries the 185 rears... Maybe I should have tried he 175' too or should I go even smaller ?
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: Hazey-n-Marc on May 19, 2013, 08:09:11 PM
I would try the 175's, they might fit. The wheels might rub when the car is jacked up, but not when it's on the floor, weird camber setup on the 126 means the wheels tuck under when you lift the car.

many tyre sellers sites explain this better than I can

The maximum tyre size that fit under the wheel arch without modification is 165X55X13 the maximum offset on a 126 is 38 the Uno alloys have an offset of 42.5 which will fowl on the inner rear arch, I had to use a 5mm spacer on both back wheels :D

Run with the maximum tyre size, which Pete126 says is 165-55-13 but will need 5mm spacers at the rear (no feedback about the fronts)

I'll try and source tyres from my tyre man and feedback ...... Thanks all for the input, really appreciate it.

Didn't need spacers on the front, but you probably need 5mm spacers as it was the wheel that was catching on mine ;D

That Pete has always been a bit of a wide boy  :P
155s will sit flush with the side of the rim but if you have the rims just fit a rim to the rear and check the clearance on the suspension arm. It should be close but close is good  :)

I feel like a dirty boy! having used my bis daily for 3yrs I now have a brand new Nissan Navaro (company car) (not actually mine) (as if) but I feel like an unfaithful tart! But will be on the Yorkshire run at the weekend, better change the mayo (oil) 1st, me and the lad can't wait. Still using the bis to go to karate in though. Its funny seeing derisory looks change to "Hello Sir just admiring your fine stead!" when the person sees three people all in Karate gear crammed inside dressed like monks. Once some scooter oiks pulled up and I could hear them laughing at the car and they clearly thought it was their one chance they had to blast something off from a standing start but then they stopped laughing when they saw us all kitted out like Tenko guards also they got smaller in the mirrors as we set off!
We drive the bis as the emperor commands it!

I'm really not very happy.

Went got two smaller tyres on a couple of spare rims and they STILL rub on the rear, took them off, put them on a couple of times to double check everything and its the ALLOY rim that's rubbing NOT the tyre.

You can see at the top of the picture where it's rubbed...... GGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR........

I don't get it how the same rims fit other 126 Bis but not mine.

If you are using Cinquecento Sporting alloys, you will need spacers for the rear.

Hi started the wee beastie up, started on two cylinders then cut down to one.  Check everything out and it looked as if a spark plug wasn't working so replaced with a new one. started up again on two and then cut down to one again, don't know what is going on it is the same cylinder that is cutting out.  I will check compression tomorrow.

This was last weekend. I finally changed the fuel tank on the 126. This is probably the worst one I`ve seen so far. I could see my inline filter was getting dirty really quickly, but didn`t expect this :o
It had about a dustpan full of rust in the bottom of it.
The car has only been off the road for couple of years and it even looked like the tank has already been of at some point.
The new one was a bad fit for some reason, but all done now and car is running sweet.
 Few pics.

Hi Graham,
I have got to block it down ready for the top coat(work keeps getting in the way!) and finding someone who wants to spray satin black is a f****** nightmare! Then its just put it back together & mot? Sounds simple.......

Finally got a tyre on one my 13x6 revo's so I could test fit it today- the are spaced more at the front so no arch problems despite being wider than my last set but they are touching the shock on the back so looks like a spacer 15mm? will be required. But at least I can check all the arch clearances so I don't destroy the tyres/arches on its maiden voyage this time! Pic!

Took the window drain plugs that Chris DeVille and Ladislav sent me to my mechanic chappy so he can complete my restoration...fingers crossed if we can do the MoT it could be ready for this weekend!  The moral of the tale is don't throw anything away, especially if you are breaking a car, these little things would have been impossible to find/buy without the help of 2 super club members and without them we'd have had to fabricate something which would have been pants!   ;D

Lovin that steering wheel 73  :D

Fitted my headlamps tonight! YaY  ;D

Thanks Bar Vitelli for supplying the lamps and the advice, those links sorted me out, was panicking as I was trying to figure out how to adapt the headlight to take the more usual/modern wire clip to hold the bulb in, took me ages to figure out the large 2 pronged metal ring will hold the bulb nicely. Doh!

Anyway, here's a couple of pics to explain my panic

Got a battery for Spoko today, (077)

Not exciting in itself but,

Went to a new place in Belfast called Battery World, walked along the front of the building under the big Battery World sign, past all the big pictures of batteries, through the front door into the shop full of car, van and truck batteries, up to the counter with a stand on it displaying an assortment of smaller batteries and asked...

"Do you do batteries?"  :P

The girl's face was priceless,  :o ;D

..but she nearly instantly went into professional mode and asked what it was for, the guy behind the counter with her caught on straight away I was taking the P and near wet himself laughing  the more he laughed the more serious she tried to be, making me laugh and him laugh harder with me

Snuck in an hours tinkering today, I only smelt of petrol a bit when I got home so Hazey might not have noticed.  ;D
Fitted the Polish 30S2 carb today, still on the old nearly dead pump and lines, ticks over better and slower than I could ever get that bloody weber 30dgf to but it still bogs down when the second venturi opens, hopefully just needs a bit of adjustment. It's great knowing that there are no bits missing from this one.

This carb seems to have been designed better for the 126, you can actually get to all four bolts quite well.

The other day I was hearing a weird sound from my passenger front wheel.. It almost sounded like a bearing was grinding but it wasnt. After taking it apart and inspecting, my drum is warped! ??? I figure being a 1978 nothing has been touched before. So, I decided to go ahead and redo the whole brake system :P Today, 160 euro later I got new Drums, Slave Cylinder's, Master Cylinder, Shoes, and rubber lines!!!! Not a bad price I think for all them goodies! 8) This will be my project for Sunday!!!! ;D (does anybody know how much Dot 4 goes in this little beast?)

Greased my King-pins.
Found out how to do this and wow what a difference - the steering is super light now. Recommend this easy job to everyone.
Somebody had fitted 3/8 inch 90 degree ones which are a pain so also ordered the correct metric ones to make this job even easier in future  ;D

Today, I replaced the rear engine mount spring and rubbers on the deville. The old ones were knackered as you can see. Also did some tidying under the bonnet, and some hammeriting to keep the rust at bay.

Also found that the pipes coming down from the front windscreen drain, were just hanging down under the battery and are too short. Any water would have just been dripping under the battery tray. One has been relocated, but the other needs to be extended. Another job for the list, I also finally found time to mow my lawn too!  :P.

I stripped down a 500 and a 126 gearbox side by side to compare the inner gubbins. Some interesting similarities  :)
Rebuilt gearboxes look to be next step. 126 synchro box with Bis final drive & a standard 500 box.

Not today but yesterday, at night, after the day from hell at work, all stressed out I drove my red car to the mechanics for it's MoT prep and some welding.  It was like the ride of death...I had to work the accelerator with my toes as it did not return, the indicators stopped working half way there so I had to stick my arm out of the window (thankfully all right turns), the steering wheel that I had replaced started to wobble because it was not tight enough and some muppet decided to tailgate me as I struggled to hit 15mph up one of the steepest hills in Halifax, coming down was even more fun with my spongy breaks and then stalling and failing to start at one of the junctions and getting out to push it out of the traffic queue only to lose control as it gained momentum backwards and went over my shoeless foot...  :o

Best fun I've had all year, forgot all about my crap day, even better I'm looking good for the MoT later this week/early next week subject to figuring out how to fit one of the gearbox bits!  ;D

What about TVR's I saw a soft top at a local garage and you had to reach into the center area behind the seats to press the door opening button.  I was also told by my MOT man I had to provide a method of opening the doors from the outside.  I am looking at fitting a button under the door mirror, similar to some TVR's, to operate the solenoid after the ignition is switched on, hope this will satisfy the MOT man.

Just been back to my parents for a short holiday, I took a look on their 126. Besides the wash/vac it only needed a few deciliters of oil, some tightening on the V-belt, and adjusting a few degrees forward on the ignition advance. Nearly a year passed since I last had to fettle something, and the car is a daily driver.
How can people say Fiats are not reliable?

I've seen his name before, that Nefarious chap, as I used to read Custom Car magazine and go to the odd show. Nice work.
Good job with the solenoid. I've wanted shaved locks for years but never got round to it.

Today I changed the drums on the front end. There was an annoying noise and it was an oval drum  :o

New shoes, cylinders and drums both sides. Quite productive.

I removed the engine in mine today to rebuild it after it seemingly suffering a head gasket fault after only 1000 miles after being replaced by the previous owner....... Turns out he didn't tighten the head bolts up properly

Pulled the GAMINE out of the garage, not been in ther for a long time, to find a large mouse nest, what a stink. Stripped out the interior and power washed it. Tried to start but not enough in the battery. Hope there's no damage to the wiring.  I also had a trial fit of the distance bush and flywheel on the scuby engine. Need some minor machining to get all to fit perfectly hope to have atrial fit in the 126 soon.

A Subaru engined 126? Are you insane?  ;D

I guess you've measured up to see how it'll fit. Do you have a build thread? I'm considering engine options at the moment.

Wagoneer, the scuby conversion has been done to several 500's, I think if you go to Retro 500 there is a build thread and check youtube for 500 with scuby engine.  Once I have gathered all the bits I need I will post a build thread.

You say you applied for a V5. Is the car an import, or did it not come with a log book?

Mainly continuing to replace all the knackered, busted, broken, worn out components on the 126.

Just ordered up a recon starter and alternator for the great engine out works of May, regarding the engine swap posts that have been on previously. I have a spare 2CV engine and I was wondering if that would fit the 126.

Today I decided it was time to get some more done to get it half way to passing an MOT... began by sorting out the connectors on the rear lights as the pins needed bending to make a better contact, still need to get reverse lights and fog lights working though! After getting this sorted I decided it was time to finally take that back panel off for the first time... very easy considering half the nuts were missing!

We proceeded to take off the exhaust to see what was going on, there was some kind of rubbish filler and plenty of holes so my dad went about plating it up... I didn't care too much about it being tidy, just functional and after getting it back on... its much quieter! :).

We decided to take another look at the tappets and sorted them all out... on first run the tappety noise went completely but the timing was way out after the distributor got knocked when refitting the rear panel and engine mount and it was a struggle to start... whipped the strobe out and got it roughly timed back up and I couldn't resist taking it for a quick run to see how it behaved... I think the timing might not be set to the correct notch though still as my dad did it in a rush to get the drive back so will be taking another look tomorrow. But the tappets seem to be making a little noise again, although nowhere near where they were.

Seems to be a slight intermittent smoking at the minute... perhaps running too rich, but if the timings not right and we need to reset the idle rpm then it might be the cause? Hoping the new valve stem seals aren't naff :).[/URL]

I took the Gamine down for an MOT today, initial fail with one headlight aim low and the side indicator on the wasn't working. Angela called to let me know so a quick trip to the garage to sort out the problems, bad earth for the side indicator and a quick adjustment of the headlight and she passed. What a great feeling driving home, she only did 123 miles last year. Hope to do more this year.

drcdb15 well spotted, it`s an MCA convertible. I bought it as another project, but haven`t had much time to spend on it yet.
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???

The Blitz of course was a fairly prolific user of 126 donor cars; the CC Zero was a true kit car, produced in tiny numbers; the MCA... well, I've never seen one in the flesh, there are about 4 at least as I've found pictures of them on the internet, but they are SOOOOoooo rare!

Apart from those three, and not counting mods, body chops and so on of the 126, were there ever any other "proper" kit cars using the 126 as a donor?

I found an Impala a few weeks ago on a classic sales web site, but that was really based on the Fiat 500 though it would take the 126 engine too I believe. But in its day it was really a 500-donor rather than a 126.

So, any others? Elsewhere in Europe? (though kit cars were I believe peculiarly British due to the sales tax on cars in the 1960s not applying if the car was sold in kit form.)

[Sorry, gone a bit off-topic here, maybe the Mod can move this to a new thread?]

drcdb15 as you say I don`t want to go too off topic here, but there were actually more MCAs built than CCZeros. Two of the MCAs are now in Slovakia in the 126Fan guys collection.
You are always welcome to pop in and have a look. Better be quick though as it might be on eBay soon... :(

On another note I have finally fixed the gearbox oil leak on the 500(I hope) and also fitted a 126 gearbox torsion plate.

I woke up my Gamine last Friday, only did 69 miles last year, to find the battery flat. Charged it up and she fired up right away, checked all lights were working and took her down for an MOT today and she passed with flying colours.  Took a detour on the way home, there was a glimmer of sunshine for a change. 😎😎😎😎😎😎

I`ve done this today. Removed the running gear from the latest project for a quick refurb. Replacing the fuel tank tomorrow and checking the rest. It`s been been off the road for some 10+years, but I`m hoping to get it mot-ed soon.
I`ve also been playing with some exhaust alternatives for another project.

I should hope so considering they've been working on it here and there since November!
10 hours labour engine rebuild, new clutch, new spark plugs, waterless coolant, oil service and MOT... just short of £800

Wired a double car socket into the frunk and then ran power from it through to my new 12 quid dash cam and my boom box on the back seat!

So like way too many hours of wiring.

Also fixed the passenger door lock, hoovered, waxed, found out my boss kit don't fit and snapped my wing mirror in half

Fiddled with idle settings and replaced ht leads. Yellow! Although they are a tad long.

Day before i removed a racing stripe and had to clean off the sticky residue!  >:(
Took hours and scratched the paint. Will buff out though.

Drove from Glasgow to John O'Groats, and the BIS did NOT like it  :P

The journey involved multiple stops as the engine every so often would randomly start kangarooing, but continue on once I stop and restart. Filter had fuel in it, think original pump will need replaced perhaps.

Plus now it cuts out when the revs are low. Urghhh

Still, I can now perhaps claim to be the most northerly 126!

Well not a 126 but my GAMINE with 126 engine, gearbox and other subtle upgrades. Rolled it out of the garage just over, not been run since last year, a week ago to check over for MOT. She started up easily and all electrics worked without some fetteling, first time ever. Put her back in the garage, just had a hip replacement therefore not able to drive. Angela said she would drive it to the MOT station on Monday so got the wee beastie out on Sunday for a final check, paranoid or what, good job as the near side dip would not work. I was getting about 9-10 volts at the bulb connection but when we switched the lights on the voltage disappeared. So major voltage drop on this supply, too many wires to trace location of corrosion, probable cause. I spliced into the circuit for the off side dip as a temporary fix, we don't generally drive at night. She passed with flying colours with only one advisory, an oil leak from the sump gasket. Only another 2-3 weeks before I am allowed to drive again just in time for the forcast good weather.

I took the engine out again. After the Uxbridge show it started to make a rattling noise from the fan. Doing over 60mp/h with three adults in the car probably didn`t help. It doesn`t look like much, but that fan was making hell of a noise.
While the engine is out, I`ll be doing some upgrades. Modified head fitted already and a bis gearbox going in soon to keep the revs down a bit  ;D

Replaced the door cards, looking a bit more presentable now. Although now I'm not sure what colour of fabric to re-do the seats with, since they matched the beige/white/grey original cards. I don't want dark seats, as that'll make the car feel even smaller.

Hi there,

the starter seems to be OK now, didn't hesitate today when I fired her up a few times during the day.

I lubricated the accelerator today, because it sometimes sticks, which is, off course, not a good situation. I also took a look at my front lights, leading to the well known frustration of the little plastic things they have used on the BIS.

While I was doing that, and here comes the question, I also tested the windscreen washer pump and the read window washer pump. They both work fine, I can see the water getting pumped up, but at the rear window, I do not see any water. Can anyone point out where the water should come out and land on the rear window, cause I don't see it :-). It's a BIS from 1989. A picture would be great

That thing in the red square on the picture? That's a kind of "plug" than, I presume. I guessed it should come through there, but is't flat. Maybe they closed it when they threw the wiper away (for an unknown, probably stupid reason). I'm still looking for one, but they are not easy to find. Read wiper motor works.

I measured it up, did the drawings and had the plates laser cut.

Oh fair enough! Will you be making the drawings available? :)

Is there any bump steer?

I see no reason not to make the drawings available.

I still need to adjust my camber when the new spring settles and have it tracked properly. I only did a few miles in it today and I didn't feel any bump steer.

The rack is mounted as close as possible to the BIS mounting position as I could make out from photos I found online, although I don't have the actual measurements from a BIS

Andyzeetec it`s only an optical illusion ;D.

I`ve been working on a different set up the last couple of days. A slightly modified engine with a Panda 30 head and Weber 30 DIC. Managed to install it all yesterday and the engine seems to run pretty well. Unfortunately have problems with leaking push rod tubes which will be a pain to sort out.

Anyone else on here running a Panda 30 set up that can advise me on what push rod tube seals they used?

Hi!

I have instaled a Panda's head as well, sadly still no test drive and can't be sure if the silicone o-rings would hold the waterfall. The original ones (on the original engine) were like a piece of wood. The oil-dusty pasta was about a centimeter here and there.

I went with a pipe to a store specialized in gaskets and tried different sizes.

Unfortunately have not written the measurements down...

Kind regards!

Deyan

Hi, I have a Panda 30 head fitted to my 126 engine in my Gamine. I used original 126 tubes, I cut and shaped the head to fit the original tinware, replacement 126 seals with with a smear of good quality silicone gasket seal. It's been running for 11 years without any leaks from the push rod tubes.

The good:
https://www.facebook.com/lachlan7/videos/1656648487695042/

The bad:
Engine is not idling smoothly. When decelerating or crusing at a constant speed you can feel the engine... jumping? (best way I can describe it).

Almost tempted to swap it for a Renault 5 at times.

Wish mine ran smooth, AvB.

Did my monthly drive across Scotland and back (700 miles/1100 km) with a crunchy gearbox, no brakes and a jumpy engine.

Came back with an accelerator pedal that sticks. Another thing to fix.

I took my rusty, red car for a 187 mile round trip yesterday, a new 1 day record for me and it did not miss a beat! It's the third long trip it's done this week, 158 miles on Tuesday and 156 miles on Friday, that's 501 miles altogether! It's amazing what our cars are capable of! In fact its running better than ever as a result of being driven! Be sure to get some miles in while you can before winter sets in! It's the DeVilles turn next week, might see if I can get over 200 in a day!  8)

Fitted new seat covers. www.pok-ter.pl make ones specifically for the 126 in various colours and styles, these ones cost about £50 including postage. Quality seems excellent, and certainly better looking than my previous normal car sized ones.

Also did an oil change. I'm used to doing them but I still wish it wasn't such a hassle... I miss the convenience of normal oil filters!

Behold, some new 15w40 API SG oil off eBay (a German company called Mannol makes it)

Made a nylon bush to repair the steering rack on the Brown. It had a really bad rattle over cobbles (which we have a lot of in Yorkshire!), the garage diagnosed the problem as wheel bearings so I bought a set but my friend took one look and found that the rubber bush on the steering rack had completely wasted away! He proceeded to thinly slice a plastic bottle top into pieces and used this to act as a bush! The rattle has gone completely and I've also learnt how to repair steering racks! I've got a spare rack as well with the same problem which a good friend gave me so I'm going to have a go at that myself!

I'll probably get the term wrong but I think it's on the 'knuckle', I've got some pictures but dI'm not know how to load them, if you send me your e-mail address I'll send them over! Apparently it's a common fault on 126 racks but the repair could not have been more straightforward and probably took less than 30 minutes to do!  :thumbup

Went along to local classic car show last weekend opposite Bodium castle. Interesting day and plenty to look at. Parked up, went to register, returned to car and there were  two fiat 500's parked next to me. Nice chaps although I could sense one of them wasn't keen on 126's  ;). Both were tuned, one modified to about 45hp. Apparently beefed up to keep up with traffic. Anyway great day out. 8)

Tried to adjust the hand brake cable but ran out of adjustment at the wheels. Did a search and found an old thread advising there's some adjustment on the handbrake lever itself. Removed the plastic cover and the centre carpet, four bolts that secure the handbrake lever. Slacken them and slide the lever, which gives more adjustment.  :D

No need for new cable, unless it snaps of course.

2 years after I garaged my Fiat and I have finally finished rebuilding the front suspension! (on the left side at least  :$ )

Problem was that the garage was about 180 miles from where I was living so that's the reason for the slow progress. It's finally being supported by its own wheel-bearings again! all ready for the trip up to my new garage mere inches from my house!

So the restoration should hopefully accelerate somewhat!

Here's a before:

Nothing, but the pile of new parts is getting bigger and bigger. The engine that's going in has arrived, hopefully rebuild during the colder months.  The tinware, suspension parts are ready to be blasted and powder coated. I found a place to do the banded 12" Steels. I cant wait until the spring to start with the angle grinder.

Sorted the Silver, the plastic gear selector bush had disintegrated, thankfully I had a rubber spare! There’s nothing more satisfying than having a spare part in stock that you actually use! We did not do the job right the first time though, the 13 mm fixing bolt came loose and the gear stick lifted out of the socket as I was driving! All good now and my little car is home safely!  ;)

I was debating with myself when I was fixing the rust holes under the battery shelf whether I’d need the little drainage holes or not. My thought at the time was I’ll never take the little car out when it’s wet. I’ll maybe reinstate them [emoji848]

Great work, Allan, there are 3 things that you need as a minimum when working on a 126, a jack, a set of axle stands and a mug of coffee so it’s great to see that you have all of those in your picture!  ;)

I had a great morning at the Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble today, quieter than normal but it was presale only so assume they're having to restrict numbers.

I know I threatened last time but we should organise a mini gathering there at the next one? I'll try and be on the ball when the tickets are being released.

A few extra photos thrown is as well.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190428/c4e9f9f14562de6e7b72bd3b6780b505.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190428/eb89ab0c1461691d72a34e66a5e48e41.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190428/f1bcbc3804b05639961bbd3cf115031a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190428/5279ec64a6117d6d88e79ec5e6161251.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190428/6f6bfcefb395627b7e32f198d80fca75.jpg)

Stripped down the carb and replaced the gaskets, valve and filter. Gave the house something of a clean too.

It's booked in for an MOT this week, so finally got the brake pipes changed.

New air filter clip. Thanks Rusty.

And the decal went up a couple of weeks ago.

Started to put the 126 back on the road today...

New HT leads made and fitted.
Distributor replaced as the old one was surprisingly worn and causing issues.
Fixed an air leak on the fuel pump and one of the hoses

Need to rebuild the carb next as I think there is a float chamber issue..
New tyres needed after 3 years sitting..
Drivers door window needs fixing as the winder mechanism and cable broke

Looking forward to driving it again!

Now shopping about for a new tank cap (for one that actually fits).

Managed to finally get my wheels and tyres mounted on the rally car, after putting the car on the ground for the first time after all the hours of work I re-fell in love with it, comes up to around my midsection.. and I'm only 6foot! ;D Suspension still needs setting up, but definitely getting close to being able to take her out for a spin!

Also never buy the Ricambio 12" conversion kit and expect to fit 12" wheels without having to grind away ALOT of the caliper AND have to run a 6mm spacer and for them to tell me that they've had 0 problems with them in the past  ??? Standard NOS 12" wheel that I had didn't even turn, absolute junk, put me off buying from the company completely, nothing but bad experiences with them!  >:(

Franco will tell you that it fits standard 126 no modification at-all, yeah and I'm sure 22" wheels would fit with no modification too Franco...

Fantastic build mate! Looks awesome  ;D

Your not the only one who's had a bad one with ricambio - useless overpriced company who don't refund faulty goods! Your better of buying from Axel Gersil even though their in a different country I've alway had a good (and reasonably priced!) service from them :thumbup
Title: Re: What did you do to your 126 today ???
Post by: Club1n on August 05, 2019, 11:32:55 PM
Yeah I really didn't want to buy from them in the first place to be honest, was on a bit of a time crunch as I realised that the original 12" conversion kit I got from poland was missing the caliper retaining clips.. and they were Daewoo Tico and I couldn't find them for sale ANYWHERE

If it was a road car I probably would've just bodged it and used them, but I have a reputation for driving hard, and part of that is actually stopping safely too :P

It's actually got "kinda" safe brakes now so we'll see- Might just have to pay them a visit in person, I highly doubt he'd tell the same lies to my face ;)

Just had both rear shock absorbers of my 126 Bis replaced. Omg, the rattle emanating from the rear completely disappeared. The suspension is now completely quiet on uneven road surfaces. There is also a huge difference in the handling!

I bought the rear shocks (original Fiat/Lancia) in kit form (i.e. including built-in bottom bushings, upper rubber rings with washers and lock nuts) from Ricambio. Believe it or not, it was cheaper than other suppliers. No one sold the shock absorbers in kit form. Many sold the other bits like the bushings separately, so ended up being more expensive.

I also had the idling sensor/relay/controller (Fiat/Lancia branded)(also Ricambio supplied) replaced as one of the connectors of the old one broke off. It increased the idling when the two speed radiator fan switches on. It behaves better than the old one. It switches on seamlessly, with no sudden rise in idling speed.

Also had the transmission fluid flushed and replaced. From the service history records, it has never been checked/topped up from new. So, thought I'd give the transmission a new lease of life with new fluids.

30k mile(ish) 650cc, BIS box, lightened flywheel, opened up the airflow a bit, and cooling mods for now.
I've got a spare engine that I'm planning on building on the side, but with the regulations of historic rally and such, you can only *really* do things that you can prove are period correct, I'll have to do alot more research and suchlike before starting that.
It will be good to get a bit of seat time in the car before making it a little pocket rocket though :D

I have receipts from 1984 for the 795cc Alquati conversion done on one of my engines. That would have been pre 1977 as the engine was originally a 594cc. The guy who commissioned the work raced cars on the European circuit on an amateur basis but I do not know if that included the 126. I think that the car came to some sort of a sticky end after 3,000 miles. Also very little seems to be known about Camillo Alquati but I do know that he ran a racing team in Italy and specialised in the Super Mirafiori & 126 Fiat cars.

love seeing the progress on your restoration.  really wonderful work.  keep at it dude

I bought a Gianinni oil sump and noticed the oil return opening wasn't cast that well, so had to take some material off.

I went to the garage and looked at it buried deep at the back and under its cover, then walked away and closed the garage.

Just got back from Poland with a suitcase full of goodies. Technically all I've done today was put the new made to measure cover on. But here is the rest of the swag too. Enough to keep me busy over winter.
Refurb calipers were £40, adapters were less than £10.
Kingpin kits were £15 for both.
Shock rubbers were £3.
Cover was less than £20.
Fuel pump was actually a UK purchase, eBay £21.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190920/91613b66b82f657625e5e11785902bd3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190920/74a9fb7f19a934a37de9b67e4bd39a2a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190920/4f61fa73c8f3a74b2e6c056c3d9899c7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190920/ac28ab23af9f7cf73b413287b359c099.jpg)

Just recently started to disassemble the rear suspension. I want to refurbish all the parts before putting them back together. New parts are orded.
Removing the old suspension bushes took some serious persuasion :rant and heavy iron. We welded this old press on a serious piece of steel beam and use a meter long steel tube to turn   :good:

All my parts arrived from Allegro today.  I'm considering writing a buying guide to help navigate buying things from Poland. Is this something you guys would be interested in?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191028/3919b5cd07e7a0c8aace576b4edcc9f0.jpg)

Yes that would be great.  How did you make the payment? Do allegro sellers accept paypal?

I used a Revolut card, it's like a travel money card. Excellent exchange rate and no transaction fees. You don't even need a real card, a virtual card works fine.

I'll get on it shortly, if deemed good enough maybe you can sticky it on the forum somewhere.

revolut is great as most sellers prefer bank transfer. I have an address in PL so normally just pay COD then when I have a big pile of bits courier them home about £20 up to 30 kilos.
I'm popping over for a week in 2 weeks, I've found a few unusual bits I would like for BYL.

Well with all this time on my hands have done a few jobs recently. Firstly a good wash, wax and polish. Then a good polish of the chrome and a thorough clean inside. Then I got round to fitting a pair of rear seatbelts that I had been putting off (don’t know why I had put it off as it was an easy job). Have also stripped down and cleaned the fuel pump and carburettor and car is running better than ever, although not taken it too far as it doesn’t really count as an essential journey! Am looking forward to when we get to the other side of this and taking the car for a long unessential drive.

I cheat fixed my favourite blue car, faulty thermostat, I’ve got the part but chickened out of taking the whole housing off to fit it so simply dropped the linkage rod so that the flap stays open, I think it’s only 4 bolts to take it off, I think I could have got them off but was not sure that I could get them back on! I was hoping that I could do it without taking it off but it seems to be far too fiddly. The main thing is that it works so I’m going to bed very red wine happy! 😘🍷

Returned from a lovely drive  8) to discover my tail lamp lens had broken off. (Plastic screw heads had snapped off) So retraced journey in the hope of finding it undamaged, unfortunately it had been driven over😪. Oh well, ordered a new one. While I was at it, took the opportunity to clean the earths and lamp connections. Also checked and cleaned connectors in passenger footwell/wheelarch.

Another job; I suspected the head gasket had gone on the BIS as coolant was coming out of the expansion tank. Bought a CO2 Combusion Leak Gas Test kit and did a sniff test, luckily fluid stayed blue, so fine. Problem was I had over filled the coolant tank as Float switch was faulty, so removed side grill and switch so coolant could flow out to switch hole level.

I broke down seven times in the DeVille today, I love it but it’s a heartbreaker. Before I had Fiat’s I had a Vespa. It never broke down. All I ever did was put oil and petrol in it and it ran forever. I didn’t even clean it. It’s a real beauty though so I’ll have to keep trying, I’ve done everything I can think of multiple times so the next step is to take it to a specialist.

It cut out when it got too hot, Pete, so I had to let it cool down each time. We’ve done a long list of things to try and sort it, new coil, condensor, HT leads, points, thermostat, carburettor, fuel pump, oil, spark plugs, reset the timing and checked the valve clearances all to no avail. It’s probably something really silly that we are missing so I’m hoping that a specialist can finally get it sorted.

Did you fit a ballast resistor with tour new coil? If not, it will get too warm and cut out after a while!

Might be your issue?

Have you checked the tension on the fan belt? Also check that the fan itself isn't loose by holding the front pulley and see if you can move rotate the cooling fan,  if it does the fan will still rotate but start slipping as the revs increase which would cause over heating, just a thought.

Thanks, Pete, we’ve checked that, the fan side of the engine is nice and cool but the heat coming out of the other side seems unusually high even with the thermostat flap fully open. We’ve checked a long list if things so it’s either something really silly or something that we’ve not checked correctly.

Bought  and fitted a fire extinguisher. Hopefully will never have to use it. No drilling for bracket, just a tight fit under the seat crossbar. :)

£16 a month ago, but looks like its shot up in price since :o

Put the Bis cooling system back together with the stupidly expensive new alloy hose union, new jubilee clips all round and now minus the thermostat.  Flushed the system through twice with central heating system cleaner (much cheaper and I had some) and refilled with 50/50 antifreeze.  Now having a well earned cuppa and thinking about the next job on the list ...
