Title: Are Fiat 126 Bis the same as Fiat 126 650cc air cooled
Post by: jumpinjacks on April 26, 2005, 10:25:44 PM
As you all know I have an off road buggy Blitz that is powered by a Fiat 126 650cc engine.
I have recently found a Fiat 126 Bis whole car which has a 700cc water cooled engine for sale for ?80.
I was just wondering are the majority of the parts the same on the Bis as they are on the 650cc Air cooled model as I would want to buy this car for spares.
The part I actually need at the moment is the stub axle and king pin set up, But I would like to buy the whole car then I would have loads of spares. I did find a stub axle on its own whilst searching on the internet for ?75 inc p&p, So I thought this was a bargain buy for the whole car.
Let me know what you all think.
Any help would be much apprieciated.
Many Thanks,
Adam.

I don't think any of the mechanical parts are the same!
I know the bis gearbox will not fit the aircooled motor. The bis engines are not very good for reliabilty so probably not a good idea for racing.
I am not sure if the front suspension setup if it is the same as the 500/126? Perhaps someone else can advise?

Just wondering I know the Fiat 126 650cc engine is run on leaded fuel, I use Shell optimax with lead additive for my buggy but what is the Bis Model run off?
Is it leaded or unleaded?
Thanks,
Adam.

I got my Fiat 126 BIS today to strip it down for parts and thought I would have a drive in it down my lane before ripping it apart.
And all I can say is WOW!!! :D  I didn't realise these cars were such fun to drive. Now I am thinking of selling my off road Blitz and keeping the Fiat instead.
Also does anyone know what tuning you can do to make them faster?
My only worry is finding spare parts that I might need if things go wrong!!
Where do all you guys get your spare parts from for your Fiat Bis?
The front wheels do seem to wobble a bit when you hold them and wiggle them but not much. Does anyone know why this is?
Many Thanks,
Adam.

Most of parts (except engine and gearbox) from BIS fits into aircooled version.

All 126 650 (aircooled) before 1990 should be run on leaded fuel, or on unleaded fuel with lead supplement.

It will probably be the kingpins - a well known fault.  Easy to do most of the work yourself but you need a reamer to do the job properly.  You can either do everything except the reaming and get a Fiat garage to do it for you, or if the wear is only on the pin (and it often is) just put in a new pin and leave the bushing.

There isn't alot of play in the wheel though just a little bit.
Will it be alright if I leave it for a while and keep driving it?

Yep, as long as it is the kingpin it will be fine.  Common MOT fail point but not really dangerous, the wheel won't fall off or anything.  Also, if you pump up the kingpins with grease through the nipple on the housing it might get rid of the play anyway.

I don't need an MOT as I will be using it for off road use. That is why I worried it would get worse.

If any body any body wants a cd version of the BIS workshop manual, ?1.50 to cover costs i.e. cd and p&p, if you all think this sounds a little dear let me know. but to me it sounds a fair price, compared to what they are charging on ebay.
