Hi,

just been reading about cleaning you engine out, not steam cleaning but actually getting rid of carbon diposits etc...

there is stuff you can buy called 10k boost which you pour into the engine and in the past i have used this redex stuff you put into the petrol (just like optimax petrol) but it all costs loads, then i came accross a new method!

take off you vacume pipe and let your car drink half a litre of water! or trickle it down into the carb...

i know at the moment i must sound like a mad man but here are some websites about it... i'm going to do it to my 1.8 8v golf gti in a few days as the engine is sounding as rough as a cats tongue... i will let you know how i got on...

The best way to clean carbon build-up out of your engine is NOT to take the car out and run it as hard as you can. This only results in meetings with local law enforcement personnel, and doesn't do much for cleaning out carbon.
If you really want to clean the carbon out of your engine follow these simple steps. Fill an empty soda bottle with water. Remove your air cleaner. Start your engine. While using one hand to control the throttle, trickle the water into the carb or throttle body with the other while holding your thumb over the bottle opening. Keep the engine rpm's up so that the engine doesn't die. Make sure that you don't pour the water in too fast! Water doesn't compress and if you pour too much water in, severe engine damage can result! White smoke from the exhaust is normal. If you have a port fuel injected car, you obviously won't be able to use this method, but I have had success with connecting a vacuum hose to a port at the base of the throttle body and sticking the other end of the hose into the bottle of water. The vacuum of the engine will suck the water in, creating the same effect. This will clean out even the most stubborn carbon, by 'steam cleaning' your cylinders.

in the mean time here are the websites... it really is a very very old tried and tested method....

Very interesting, i bought some carb and injection cleaner air can the other day, i mean i cnat see the water harming your engine/carb as its gets burnt instantly. Do you think this is ok for aluminium engines though??

let us know mike how u get on

Well i just got back from my garage... using the vacume pipe which leads onto the throttle body i ran about 2 and a half pints of water through my engine....

first of all when doing this its quite scary as your engine does tend to bog down with all the water... but as i read before when it did that i just had to rev harder... LOADS steam comes from the exhaust and lots of black crap came out the back... after it was done i took  my car up the road.

it made bit of a difference, my car pulled a LOT nicer from about 3>5k rpm... the power is much smoother now..

i would say 30 mins and a few pints of water... what a result!

lol after driving my cabriolet for a few months getting back into the gti and giving it a quick ragging up the road... i forgot how much power that car has! it doesnt have as many BHP as some cars but it has such an amazing ammount of torque.. :D

i thought if a engine takes in walter it hydraulics (no diesel engines do)
would like to no how it works and dosent do any harm to the engine, you cant compress walter so it would just turns to steam (hence white smoke out the exhaust )

don't read into everyting in that quote... it is from an american site and they are not the brightest of people!

from what you are saying i think you are on about the engine hydrolocking - which is just a posh word for stalling.

all that happens is if you put too much water in then the petrol/air ratio is not in balance and the engine cuts out (mine did it once during the process).

all that happens is the more water you pour in the harder you rev the engine causing it to suck more and burn up the water more quickly..

from what i gather from reading other posts anyway.

for the people who REALLY know about it go to these links and read the posts.

when a engine hydraulics it means it cant compress the wlater in the bor and it bends a conrod atleast

diesel engines do it if you are unlucky and go through a big pudle and it sucks it in happend to a van i had (got it with the engine dead)

its still no reson why range rover and 4x4 owners avoid pudles

(sorry for spelling)
