New 126 owner from bucks!
« on: July 22, 2018, 08:05:08 AM »
Hi Guys,

Thought I'd say hello I have a 126 Deville in blue, bought it recently it needed an engine rebuild after it died on my first journey! Luckily my local garage is Middle Barton what great people and a great place!

Needed a brake overhaul too but it's on the road now, it's done 43,000 miles is very original and in good condition not much rust! It has to be the most fun car I've ever had!

How do you add photos it keeps telling me my attachment is too large.

Thanks
Simon

How do you add a photo from a phone? Mine are too large apparently...... but there's no option to resize it when you attach it? Does everyone link them to Flickr?

Haha well original apart from it's valves and guides! Conked out on motorway, hg blew, got hot and a dropped valve guide cue one bent valve and a smashed guide!

Here's some pics, I plan to go through the whole car I know it needs some bushes, driveshaft boots and a few other bits as well as a respray once I've done the bodywork, the floorpans, jacking points etc are remarkably solid the only rust is around the bottoms of the windscreen, rear window and a tiny bit on the front wing. I'm sure I'll find lots more and it'll be a busy winter!

That is one very nice 126 DeVille  :) how did you find it?
Was the overheating accredited to the head gasket? May seem a silly question but do you know which cylinder suffered the valve damage? No 1 being the cylinder nearest the back of the car & no 2 at the flywheel end.
The first 126 we had over 20 years ago was W reg in Adriatico blue but it was not a DeVille so had black vinyl seats.

Thanks :-)

It was on car and classic for sale down in Kent. It was not as good as the seller made out but a deal was made and I drove it home! Loved the colour and the sunroof and the fact it hasn't been messed with. Even the stereo is factory! The only thing is someone has fitted inertia reel seatbelts so there's rectangular holes in the door cards which looks a bit crap.

So the bungs around the ht leads were missing and when I pulled over the large intake pipe had fallen down so the van was only getting hot air, don't know if that caused it to get hot and blow the gasket or if the gasket was the cause. All I know is it felt like it was seizing so I switched it off and called the AA!!

This may have sounded like an odd question but over the last couple of years I have worked on a number of 500 & 126 engines that have suffered from overheating. There seemed a pattern in that it was always only on or worst on no 2 cylinder then talking to others they found the same. Maybe just a coincidence.
It is well known that if the jumbo cooling hose is not connected it can lead to overheating. I recently started up my latest rebuilt engine on a table top in my garage. The sealing boots around the spark plugs had not been fitted and there was a large gap at the base of the cooling fan housing where it should connect to the sump. It was noticeable how hot the engine got relatively quickly. After fitting the plug seals and sealing the gap it made quite a difference to the cooling  :)
