Hi All,

Re: Polish based insurance for a Fiat 126p.

if anyone is brave enough to buy one and drive it back  to the uk i have some news on insurance.

Apparently in Poland they insure the car not the driver, so as long as you have a valid licence you can drive any car.

Normally this insurance is transferred to the new owner automatically. I have a little fear of driving out of Poland into Germany and it being cancelled.

Therefore i have done some research on my own insurance cover when i purchase a fiat 126p soon. There is a company called AXA Direct.PL and there cover price is 580 Zloty = £120 per year for eu cover and breakdown. Compared to £1500 to transport it to the UK.

I hope this helps someone.

Axa also said once the car is registered in the UK, to email them a copy of the certificate and they will refund any unused time on the insurance, possible around £80 so sound like the cheapest offer too.

Thanks Danny

How about recovering a car yourself? They fit in a back of a decent size van and it would cost you less than half of the quoted price. You would also save the insurance cost and have a comfortable journey back ;D.

1973/126 thanks for the tip. i have just researched this, the only van hire company that allows them out the uk is Europe van. But they only let there vans go as far as Germany so no good for Poland. they also only allow MWB vans out the uk. the price they quoted was  £408 plus £1150 excess with a 150 mile daily limit. so im not sure its the best option. thanks for your suggestion every bit helps it was a different angle to look at.

Well it helps if you have a van yourself or if you could borrow one. Hiring one would be too costly. How about towing it back on a trailer?

I know loads of people driven them back from Poland. I personally wouldn't fancy doing that journey in a 126.
