Paul i made this thread  sticky (so it sits at the top) because i thought Bruce had done well at comparing the two, i like to see old cars compared with modern.

hi paul, no i think that one is a gamma??, which belongs to Andy Collins who i bought that aircooled from has about 16 cars, and funny enough not long after that pic was taken he went and bought a MK1 Beta Saloon, the owner was a builder and was about to use it as an everyday winter car  :???:  Its a stunning looking car with no rust!! Andy owns a a few Beta's.

we have quite a lot of Smarts around here, i cant wait to get my bis back on the road (probably won't be till next year now as i am moving very soon) so i can drive up to a smart and see the drivers face when he/she looks down and sees a smaller car especially if it had 4 peps in it  :D

the reason the smart is called so is for one reason . every time their owners set eyes on them they feel that sting caused by all that wasted money. i quite like them they make me laugh and driving one is a hoot as they are so bad.

As i was reading this post i was wondering if we could put some other small cars into the subject

For example: the good old faithful Mini. I cant decide which car to buy as ive just passed my test im 21, and im drawen between the Fiat 126 and the Mini.

Oh and by the way i wouldnt be seen dead in a Smart!

HELP ME BUY A 126 Please!!

For a first car, buying a 126 is the better move. If you find one then it'll probably be in a far better condition than the mini in the price range you are looking at. To get a good mini you'll be looking at a couple of thousand pounds, and its hard to get a solid 998cc one with minimal rust. (I have to admit, i was torn between a 126 and mini also, but i chose the 126 purely for the fact that they have become so rare, and they, in my opinion, have more character).
Also with a mini you'd be looking at the 848/998 variants, and you'll have to be careful on what model you buy because as this will be your first car - a lower insurance group is better.

You can go to this website:
http://www.abi.org.uk/carinsurance/default.asp

And it has a list of all UK cars' insurance groups.

(You'll see that all 126's are group one - the lowest)

I'm sure you'll see whats better for the first car

I would prefer a 126 to be honest as they do have more character, pluss there are loads of minis knocking about.

Only problem is... i cant find one! i live in clitheroe lancashire, i cant find 1 anywhere local. i suppose im gunna have to travel!

by the way, ive seen a cracking little Fiat amigo campervan 900cc on Ebay!    WANT IT WANT IT WANT IT!

i havnt driven a mini or a smart.. but i have got a morris 1100 s which is basically a four door mini with a 1275cc cooper s engine, and while it is a great car, and i spent alot of time and money making it work, i still think the 126 is hugely more fun to drive. the morris has character too, but the 126 is "cute" and nothing gets peoples attention as much as that. plus a 126 actually seems to get more female attention than other cars because of the cuteness.. girls die for cuteness.
i make myself sound bad there, i just want to clarify that i have only been with one girl in my life and im still with her. i am judging by her reaction and that of my female friends and people who my friend and i have come accross on our travels.

also, minis use more petrol. and my morris definately does, though it is still great for consumption.

buy an isetta:P

for character the 126 is great but i bet if all of you were given a 126 and told to drive it 100 miles everyday, not on motorway but round residential streets you'd all be begging for a smart after less than a week!

want to bet? i did when i lived in london and driving around bus queues on a rainy monday morning on the pavement is a hoot , or gunning it down one way streets the wrong way , or taking short cuts through southwark park on the footpaths ...i better stop for risk of getting into trouble .
