Slow starting

Once the engine is running, it is generally ok. The problem is it usually takes 3 pulls on the handle (aircooled) before it actually fires. New spark plugs in recently and the carb is clean and tidy, just did it myself with new gaskets, etc.
With the engine off, would the fuel just run back down the line? I'm thinking that a non-return valve after the pump and before the carb might solve this. Or should I look at replacing the pump itself?
Thanks

I had the same problem on my Bis especially in the hot weather the petrol evaporates and has to fill the carb up every time, replaced the mechanical pump with a electric low pressure petrol pump from eBay which sorted the problem out.

Thanks Pete, that's the one thing I hadn't considered.
There seems to be a deluge of pumps available, can someone recommend one? Thanks.
Pete126:
1.5 - 4psi Fuel Pump with 6mm unions is ideal, if you search on the forum there's loads of info on electric pumps
