wheel trim paint removal?

Can anyone give me some advice on how to remove flaking paint from the original wheel trims prior to painting. Any advice appreciated  :-

Don't use paint remover it melts the plastic :( you could use Wet & Dry - Scotchbrite Abrasive Finishing Pads or Brillo pads

flatten with wet 180 then 320  then panel wipe on a scotch bright pad then paint
