This might sound a bit harsh, but if the plan was to make a run back in a LHD 126, then registering might pointless as i can't see a market for them other than as parts for other 126s, buggies or 500s. Who'd want a LHD 126 when there's loads of RHD ones about?
If you think someone would want a LHD 126, then just get one pre-96. better still, come back in soemthing that could hold a decent amount of parts and panels, and would have some value here in the UK. There's plenty of cars that fit the bill.

Paul i wish i could dissagree with you, but i think youre right, although i can see people wanting a near enough brand new 126 with electronic ignition. The cars are still quite dear over there, i think youre looking at a 126 still in a show room for over £2k.

Paul are you going to the national microcar rally at southwell race course this weekend?

regards

I am hoping to get there on Sunday. My oldest lad is up to stay, so it will be up to him in the end. My 500 is due for an MOT but I think it will be fine if I can sort the handbrake tomorrow.

Well 96 was the year they started to fit catalysts. As far as I'm aware (for over here anyway) send off to the dvlni, they issue a reg. Then convert the head lights (or at least cover the kick up on the beam pattern).Change the speedo from kph to mph and finially swap fog and reverse lights from one side to other. As far as I'm aware my cars the only one in N.I that has been imported.

I think PaulB has probably hit the nail on the head. Cost of legal work and conversion of speedo etc adds to the cost and still leaves you with a LHD car to sell to an already small market.

 i would be even more upset about the "red tape" if there wernt many 126's left here.

if you were gunna bring one back - couldnt you just bu ya half decent one, fill it with parts. drive it here, strip it down, and keep or sell on the bits.

and not bother registering it.

this would make some bits redundant, but not lots of them.

How far is it?

About 1000 miles if you use the hook of holland Harwich ferry.

just done it in a 1981 VW T3 full with parts

they questioned the alloys on the roof :D

Only took a couple of days with an overnight stay in Germany. a 126 is no slower than my camper.

Just thought i'd have my two penneth worth, people who own Fiat126's bought them for there quirkyness, character, and to drive something different. there not the most reliable cars on the road but we love them, there like our babies always wanting attention, which they need alot of, there are still some gems about in the u.k. for not alot of money as we've seen on ebay over the past months aircooled and bis's, and if you go to your local independant car shops (not the big ones) they can usually get the everyday running gear, points/plugs/condensers/fuel pumps/clutches/ brake shoes/drums and gasket sets usually cheaper than can be bought on ebay or the specialist who in my opinion are like car dealerships. they know how to charge for parts, unfortunatley they are the only source for the more obscure parts and then we have to pay through the nose, I have know problem with buying an imported lhd fiat126 but i will only pay what i think the car is worth (which would'tn be alot) and i'm buying it to keep and not to make a profit on, if you can make a profit on one.
if the trip goes ahead i would'nt mind going to bring back the hard to get i.e. suspension parts which cost an arm and a leg from the specialists.
