Towing with the 126
« on: July 08, 2009, 11:58:38 PM »
Hy lads, im have been thinking for a while now about getting myself a camping trailor for the 126. its not a normal camping trailor, its rather a trailor which unfolds into a large tent, it weights round 350 kilos, so legally i should be able to drive it, now im just wondering if any1 here has ever towed anything with their 126, and whre did you place the hook? the manual states that the bis is "NOT SUITABLE FOR TOWING" but i know for a fact many people used them to tow stuff around, i even think there was a little trailor made just for the 126...

the pics of the "brako" trailor:

Mine does not fit to the BIS! It is fixed with the rear Bumper, that would be no problem, but a shoring from the hook forwards is screwed to the gearbox-bracket, and this is different from AC to BIS. I've choosen this towbar, because it seems to be stronger than the other purchasables. Those are only fixed with the bumper screws, but they fit to the BIS. Problem with mine was, that the alloy sump is too big, so i had to fix the towbar 4cm deeper.

Wait, my gearbox tends to shake somewhat during the ride, doesnt it mess up the towbar? it is a good idea non the less, what exactly do you tow with your 126 andi, im interested in performance issues, will it be able to reach lets say 50 km/h with a 350kg trailor? cheers

The towbar is not fixed to the gearbox, but to its hanger! And the hanger itself is connected to the floor/tunnel with the traverse. So, the push/pull energy is directed right into the frame. Other towbars are a joke!
My wife wants to have an Eriba Puck some day. Me not...But i do a lot of motorbike transportation with my trailer, and my Audi A6 is boring. 50km/h??? On german roads you are allowed to drive 80 with a trailer. I don't think, that this will be a problem for my engine  ;D

so i take it you have some nasty upgrades under that hood... im quite concerned with my 26 hp stock engine, with 4 people inside it tends to go rather slowly...
oh, and another question andi, is that hook legal? we have something called a "euro" hook here, which can/must be taken off when not used, and is pretty much the only one legal in croatia...

As far as i know, the BIS has a different gearbox holder. Or am i wrong? The towbar is fixed to this holder. I want to make this towbar legal by consulting my TÃœV-engineer. I hope he'll have a good day...My dude Adrian from Poland ordered this towbar for me from the company, who made them a few years ago. If i can get papers for it from my TÃœV, we want to order a few more.

Ive got a towbar for my Bis and it bolts onto the suspension!  Not fitted it yet but I am sure it will be fine.
