It's tough for a youngster to afford car insurance nowadays, and I do sympathise with you. There was a debate on the moneysaving forum which may be of interest to you.

Get your dad to insure it and put you as a named driver that would be cheaper, have you looked at some classic car policy's??? I'm not sure what age the vehicle should be for these.....

whys that illegal? you have to tell the insurance company how often you will drive the car also the same for your dad. The only downside to having your dad insure it and having you as a named driver is if you crash!! your dad loses his ncb thats if he hasnt got them protected.

i think you are getting confused if your dad insures the car and puts you as a named driver and he is a occasional driver then all is ok but if you crash your dad is going to kill you which is illegal  :o but if he is the main driver and you are the occasional driver - driving everyday and have a crash and the insurance company gets wiff of it they could refuse to pay out.

It's illegal if you are the owner of the car and it's registered to you, but your dad is the main driver and you're a named driver (I think)

It's not illegal to be the main driver and add you parents though. That's what i did and it knocked £400+ off my quote. Still silly prices though, i struggled to get classic too as i'm only 23. I paid £345 for mine this year and £800 for the Abarth 500! (new one, not Classic)

Insuring a car under someone elses name to get it cheaper is known as a fronted risk and your correct in thinking its technically illegal (its a form of fraud). That said, if you do it how can the insurer proove who the main driver actually is if the car is registered to the policy holder.

I would give a few classic insurers a ring though, most do want over 25 drivers but im sure some will insure you

you can do it the other way round- put yourself as the main driver and your dad as a named driver- as he is a lower risk than you might find this will lower the price of the policy- I always used to put my parents on my policys as it lowered the price-

my other half put me on her new policy last month and it was cheaper!

worth a try!
one resprayed and another arrives- double trouble BIS style!!

Move out of your house, buy a caravan, set up camp in a totally obvious public place, move from time to time, surrender the tax on you car, don't insure it and you're sorted. The Police may stop you but won't be able to prosecute you as you are now a traveller.....tongue firmly embedded in cheek....... :P
