I also have a garage full of parts that can go with it. Wheels, engine, suspension, doors, bonnet, boot, glass, 3 carbs 'refurbished'. Too much to list really.

Please make me an offer for the whole lot.

I really need to get a cheap runabout and pay the recovery asap.

When it was lifted out the roof Just above both doors has creased.

You can see the water level. The mess everywhere is Marcs fault (bloody cat litter). ;) :D Marc you are wrong is does not soak up as much damp as I thought 'note it was in the car before and during the dip' ;D

See where the door was forced

I will remove the carpets (and wash)  seats are vinyl so should be fine. As for the steering column being crow barred off as the steering lick was on I don't know yet.

Biggest problem is that the roof is  :rant

Do you know if it was running when it went in the water? Hopefully it wasn't. Have you got any photos of the roof?

No it looks like it was dragged. Then just rolled down the hill into the pond. The pond is only about 100 yards from my house. I back onto the park, so was an easy job for them.

They also smashed windows on 10-20 other cars.

Mate I feel sorry for this misfortune.

Whoever did this to you shuld be brought into justice.
Who the f...k can be as stupid to do such thing? Where were the officers that night?

I am pretty sure that the car can be restored once again but after being dropped into water my concern would be the corrosion afterward.

The engine shuld be fine but the electric wires - all around- can be pain.

Anyway good luck mate.

P.S. Could you please post the pictures of the roof?

Title: Re:  Bad Christmas
Post by: Hazey-n-Marc on December 27, 2012, 09:38:52 AM
Luckily it is fresh water, not salt, so corrosion shouldn't be too bad. The relays and fuse box would be my biggest concern, also drain the petrol out and chuck it.
Title: Re:  Bad Christmas
Post by: Amateb8 on December 27, 2012, 03:18:12 PM
Was the car completely submerged into pond? Marc is right though. At least it was fresh water. Salt water could have been disastrous, particularly for the engine. It will dry out eventually. Use an air compressor to ease out trapped water from the fuse box and other areas.

Really sorry to see this- that's just awful- I think i have a bis ignition barrel and key at home if you want it to help start to sort this, I'm sure that other members of the community might be able to help if you decide to fix it....

I'd start by getting that interior out and get some trays of cat litter in there to pull the moisture out!

Don't sell her, Beryl is one of my favourite 126's on here. It all adds to the story of your ownership.

Post by: grubscrew on December 27, 2012, 06:59:11 PM
Before you turn it over, remove the plugs then spin it on the starter, to get all that water. You will need to drain the gearbox oil out as well, leave it over night to do so. you may also use a wet and dry vacuum to suck all the water out of the fabric. If things are really that bad perhaps we could all set a fund up for this poor fella even if its to pay for the recovery. ? Say a fiver each might help .Im just seeing the numbers of people read this post(ok some will be read by the same persona fw times but even £5.00 from 100 readers thats new oils points and recovery paid for.

Where were the officers that night?

There probably wern't any! You can blame the government for that!!!! 20% cuts to policing means more crime, and more w****ers like this on the streets!

But on the brightside, as there are fewer police on the streets when you find out which gimps did this to your car you can go and give them a hiding and probably get away with it  ;D

Hoep its not too bad, and it can be salvaged.

What do I do? Just drain it and refill a couple of times? Or do I rebuild?
Title: Re:  Bad Christmas
Post by: Kent126 on December 29, 2012, 04:59:18 PM
Personally I would re-build it, because you wont be able to tell how far in the water has penetrated. Strip it down, and re-build it with a few extras  ;D

Title: Re:  Bad Christmas
Post by: michaelodonnell500 on December 29, 2012, 06:56:58 PM
that's harsh, it's like watching the engine cry!
Rebuild is probably the safe bet.
Rust is unlikely yet, but all it would take is a little water to get trapped somewhere to cause a nightmare.
Can you part strip the engine and put it in the boiler room with the carpets?

for the door frames I would suggest getting some help from a panel beater.
a hammer and block would get the gutter almost aligned top and bottom, but it will still look like someone has squashed in the sides. It's a pain since it's a double wall section. One of those hooked dent pullers would work, but it involves drilling holes that would have to be filled.

If It were mine, I would:

The rope caused a pincing damage to either side of the car, this is the closest way to replicate the forces being applied in the opposite direction

I would hammer the steering column areas flat, then drill and bolt together using at least 6 x M8 bolt/nuts. Or drill through the plate and weld. Welding is preferable, but there are only 4 bolts holding the column onto the plate, so you would be exceeding that retaining force with 6.

If there are any parts that you need, put up a list. I'm happy to post anything I can spare, I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Good on you mate for getting stuck in. If the door pillars are well in you could use an acro builders prop to push out both pillars at the same time, a bit fiddly but with a few pairs of hands to help. This way you can do it by gradual degrees.
As for the engine, short of rebuild, I would turn engine over by hand , less the plugs, if thats ok , after new oil, turn with starter on to flush out any water in bores, you could even put a dry rag in to soak any thing up , then put plugs back loosly and see if she will go. Good luck.Mike.

I agree, don't bear the parts burden all by yourself, we've all got ''junk'' that it would be good to put to good use, if it helps I've got (what I think is) a spare RHD Carello headlight that is in good condition that I'd be happy to send you free of charge.  It's taking up space in my shed so you'd actually be doing me a favour.  If I shift it, I'll have room for yet another car (!!)  ;D

Around that area there is an inner skin and an outer skin. You can push from the inside where the seam is, This will get the gutter into place, but it won't reposition the other skin. The dent on the outside will remain, and there will probably be a new crease on the inside as well.

Unlucky mate ! When you consider all of the usual problems we face every day trying to keep these cars on the road idiot brained vandalism is really something you could do without. Re the water in the engine, when my Bis which was just over 2 years old blew the head gasket there was no manual available at the time . I needed the car back on the road PDQ so did what I thought was right but unknown to me I had allowed a lot of the coolant into the sump. When I restarted the engine & it got warmed up I had not seen anything like it . What I thought was smoke was in fact steam which belched out for 15 mins or so then stopped. I topped up the oil and the engine was fine. I would be very confident that if you drain the sump , fill with a cheap oil & let it run for 30 mins, drain and refill with decent oil that engine will be OK  :)

Thank you so much,

THANKS TO EVERYONE.

I hope to drain all the oil out tomorrow, the fill up to the very top with cheap oil, drain again, refill and see what happens. The worst thing is that the engine dies, but to honest I really don't have much to lose.

Will a battery still work if it has been under water for 3 hours? I suppose in the morning I will find out.

Best of luck tomorrow dajwid. Was the car inspected by a police examiner for fingerprint lifts etc??  I doubt it would have yeilded anything due to the water and also anything that may have been recovered during the inspection, its evidential would be compromised due to the car being man handled during recovery. In my opinion, the only chance of finding the offenders is that someone in the area may have seen the act being carried out and in a position to id them or describe them to the Police and/or Police information. Did you make an actual complaint to the Police, as in a complaint in writing?? If not the Police may not have recorded the crime and as a result may not be investigating it. Best advice, contact the local Police and find out what the low down is if you wish to try and locate the fools that did this. Hope this helps.

Great news. Essex Police sent me a lovely letter, telling me they are looking for my stolen car. If the hear anything they will contact me, Should I hear any information I should contact them.

I went to my local Police station to ask if they:-

A) read the local paper
B) remember what they were doing on Christmas day
C) Have any bloody idea what their job is.

Sadly the Police station is closed at the weekend.

My faith in the police lessens by the hour.

a tip for your engine, remove the sump, clean the oil filter out, replace both and run some 'cheap' oil through it with the starter motor only. Repeat the process and you should have most of the water out.

when shes done, fit some hefty bumper iorns and run them down, then they'll know how they made you feel :P

sadly this is the problem with owning a classic car.. they stand out.
out of the whole street, expect the special one to get special treatment. people get jealous and have to damage other things, bet you they dont have anything nice like what they damaged at home!

best way to get your own back is to get her back to her former glory! dont give up, just keep working at her, it'll be slow but you'll feel like a champion once you've done it!

it adds to the cars history!

That is the 5mm black tar that covers the interior of a 126. I picked off a couple of bits and was amazed that is was still holding water. I have now started the laborious task of removing it all.
Behind the rear seat was first, that came away with a heat gun and scraper.  Water was sitting in the ridges.
I have nearly finished  the back parcel shelf. I needed to chisel the bits off in small chunks.
I assume the floor will be the worse.
I was wondering how much all this extra weight actually weighs. Has anyone weighed it?

Is this just sound insulation? it is certainly not to keep water out  :o

If anyone has removed this, what method did you find best?

The sun came out so I had another look at the steering column, The steering lock had been damaged, so was stopping the actual shaft from turning.

It looks like they used a lot of force to cause so much damage.

Out with the trusty angle grinder and the damaged part is removed. Works OK but I will no longer have a steering lock.

Next job to straighten the bracket and weld back in place.

The bracket straightened, drilled and painted. Dashboard was worse than I thought but straightened and repaired.

How are you going to repair the bent roof?

Tar stuff, mmmmm , they (FIAT), even used it in the 500`s, . It is there for reducing the "drumming"  effect , as it has sound insulating properties, you may find its louder in the cabin after its removal, and yes it can hold a film of water but does`nt absorb the damp as fabric insulant tends to. I shall be using some of these tar mats as they are quite good. Mike.

Once the car is mobile, I have been offered the use of a Portapower. I plan on using the long poles/rods and simply pushing both sides out at the same time.  :- ??? ::)

Re the tar, I had a lot of water trapped under it, it has bubbled in a few places. I will try it and see how it goes with just the mats, if not I will need to buy Dynomat.

I doubt it's normally used on submersibles.
I am fairly certain you will need something to replace it, have a good look around though, there are so many different products out there.
