Title: unleaded air cooled models
Post by: ChrisRLewis on July 04, 2005, 11:33:07 AM
Just wondering what you guys use when running unleaded petrol on the aircooled motors? I now the bis motor is ok..one of it's good points!

Additive and make?
Cylinder Head replacement?
Or no modification?
Something else?
Lead replacement petrol

Do you have to get the head modified, or can you just replace the valve seals? to use unleaded.

Chris

the usual mod for an unleaded head is special valve seats and guides.
anyone fitted one of these heads? if so would love more information on companies who supply, prices etc..

Ive been using unleaded with no additives for years. The aircooled already has hardened valve seats because of the alloy head.Ilooked up a book in work here and the aircooled engine can run fine on unleaded.

I never use any addiitive or LRP fuel. We have one of the few garages left selling real leaded fuel near me, its over ?5 a gallon tho!!! I use one tank of that for two of unleaded.

Its quite simple chris.

The lead in fuel acts as lubrication between the valve and its seat so if you take the lead out of the fuel then theres no lubrication and the seats will wear

The exhaust valve seats are harder in an unleaded head to stop them wearing out (valve seat ressesion)

My dads company has done loads of fiat aircooled unleaded conversions.

To fit 2 unleaded seats and cut the valve seats would be ?40ish (Thats the minium you can have done when converting)

You would probaly want to fit new valves and have the inlet seats refaced at the same time  (add an extra ?20ish for refacing the inlet seats +  whatever valves cost) He would even get it chemicly cleaned for you if you wanted so it looks like new!

Let me know if anyone wants details, i could prolly get a club discount for you lot.

Thats great slater, if he has a website, we can add a link to his website if you want, because im sure there are many who would want this done by a reputable garage.

cool we have very bad unfinished site here (http://www.freewebs.com/radcoengineering/) but it does have our contact details on it :)

We are not a garage as such, just engine builders/tuners. Only small with all work done in house, started up the buisness 5 years ago but dads had 30+years of experiance building engines so he knows his stuff. We do alot of classic cars and bikes everything from 50cc mopeds to 7litre v8s

If you want to add a link to the site il do a bit more work to it to finish it off :)

I am using unleaded with a redex unleaded additive.
It seems to run fine!
Apparently the higher the mileage the engine has done on leaded the better, the lead memorizes on the seats etc. So results in reduced errosion!

i'm using an additive with unleaded too (Castrol Add.)
..just wondering Cars is your redex one of an approved type?, apparently there's an approval by British Fed. of Historic Vehicle Clubs on various additives whereby they've tested and had results on all makes available.. didn't see the redex one on there but it may say on the bottle if tested ..?? can't see why not..

have a look at their website.

just wanted to make sure you have no problems!

Cheers

Hi guys
Today I read (.   https://www.fiatforum.com/500-classic/430928-engine-identification.html)     that if the engine has AK84M 650 casted , one may use unleaded fuel.  I appreciate any feedback on this.
Many thanks
