Bis thermostat removal?

To cut a long (hot) story short I've decided to try it without the thermostat.
So after lots of Plusgas, sheared rusty seized 10mm tin cover bolts, flakes of rust in eyes, skinned knuckles etc I finally got the housing off ...
Question is, is there a 'correct' way of getting the thermostat out of its housing or is it my less favoured brute force and ignorance?

Previous owner removed mine. Just cut it out with a hacksaw I think:) Car runs just fine without. Never drives it during winter time anyway.

On the aircooled model you can simply drop the thermostat insde the housing which in turn opens the thermostat flap, works fine and does not rattle, not sure if the BIS is the same but worth looking at as it would save you having to open up the tinware.

So just in case anyone reads this in the future ...
Once the housing is off and all the crud removed you'll see the big circlip ring Andyz refers to on the engine side of the housing.  Give it a good soaking in Plusgas/something else and it should prise off fairly easily, the thermostat then just pops out.
Unless I'm mistaken my thermostat was rated at 90 degrees so due to its location I imagine the top half of the engine can get quite toasty.
Next job is to refill with household radiator cleaner/water (because I had some/it's cheaper and probably stronger) and let it do its thing for a few days then flush and repeat ...
