Hello from Hertfordshire
« on: January 23, 2019, 03:08:32 PM »
Good afternoon all,

I’ve always wanted a Fiat 126 but never had the luxury of being able to have a weekend car until recently due to changes in work.

I have joined this group to read up on and learn what to look for when I come to make a purchase.

Must say I’m extremely excited to be in the process of getting hold of my very own 126 [emoji4]

That’s the big decision, I think I’m leaning towards ready to drive and just smarten up as I don’t have a garage to do welding & large mechanical work in at present.

I need to read a bit more as I don’t know the difference between bis, de ville etc

Aircooled, Deville has a rollback sunroof. Avoid newer cars 1990s EL more hassle and very cheap thin steel. First series early 70s harder to find many of the parts.
Aircooled come in plastic or chrome bumpers. Older cars have a single clock on the dash.
Tuning bits easier to find.

Bis = watercooled hatchback with engine under the boot cover. Slightly quicker and better heater. Prices often a little lower, can have head gasket problems, if cooling system looked after.

All cars. Rust rust rust. Sills, floor where the seat runners are and where it meets the sill.
Under windscreen, lower wings.

LHD cars cheaper, (made in Poland 🇵🇱)

Most parts are available. RHD headlights can be slow to find.

Thank you for the heads up, that has already cleared up a lot of questions I might have had [emoji23]

I was hoping to get a tax / mot exempt one or one that will be in next few years, but understand the older they are the more they are likely to cost.

So I guess looking at late 70’s early 80’s. Preferably Rhd

I’m trying to work out what it’s going to cost to get the car I want. Not saying money is no object but would like to buy the right car

Hi Dom , good luck with your 126 search. I am just down the road from you and it would be good to have another car nearby. I have had quite a lot of experience with these cars and also have many spare parts  :)

I’m in Hemel Hempstead and work nights on the railway so I’m about most of the time too :)
