Competition 126
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:56:53 PM »
I was speed hillclimbing last weekend in my Westfield and there was a Fiat 126 taking part.  I took a few pictures - it was at Wiscombe Park in Devon.  The guy who built it wanted to prove that you could do all sorts of motorsport on a tight budget.  He bought the car and prepped it with a full roll cage, racing seats, MSA logbook for less than ?500.  He has since used it for a stage rally, a road rally, an autotest, the speed hilclimb at Wiscombe and he plans to do a PCT in it too:

It was only standard due to the nature of the project.  However he is going to sell it so it would make a good basis for somebody else what with all the rest of the competition car work done to it.

The programme said it was 600cc, but it looks like a BIS to me.  I wasn't paying much attention on the day and it was only later I noticed 600cc/hatchback!

Hi All,
I've just bought this car! I've always had a thing about Fiats for as long as I can remember. I've owned various 127s 128s including a rally prepped 3p 131s 132s x1/9s. However until last Wednesday I was a 126 virgin!I wanted (no needed) a fully prepped rally car (after chocolate that's my passion) to compete with asap, it needed to be cheap and cheeful though, sooooo........?600 later here we are! The car is bog standard (except for the safety equipment), a gearbox mounting is broken but I was given a spare engine, box and loads of bits and bobs with the car. My plan is to do a forestry event in the very near future, just nothing too hilly.
Thinking back to my earlier Fiats, I remember that many models parts were interchangeable, does anyone know if there is a straightforward engine swap for this model, ie, a larger capacity Fiat engine that would bolt on to the gearbox? Obviously engine mountings, exhaust manifolds and a bit of fabrication is expected....any ideas ?
Look forward to replies.

Welcome :D

Theres not relly any straight foward swap, the simplest i can think of would be somethign like a VW beetle engine and box. If you get an engine from a rear engined car the main thing you would have to think about is getting it to fit you shouldent have any problems with drive train and gearlinkages. Ive also thought about mini engines but the gear linkage is a major problem as with any ofther any other from a front engined car

Not really a Major problem.  The fact it would make it mid engined and the lack of space in front of the axle path is the problem.  Who nees rear seats anyway!!

That 126 looks fantastic

I did a Hillclimb in mine once... I think that's what killed it's first engine
