126 bis - air box
« on: October 23, 2019, 06:00:59 PM »
Hello everyone

I'm looking for an original or nicely compatible air box to go on top of the carb. I can't find one on a few part sites I've looked at now.

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan, there s a complete air box and carb cover for sale on EBay at the moment....don't know if it's any good, it's in Italy and with the postage Might make it price prohibitive....👍

Thanks ever so much for the heads up!

Strange this is that it looks about 3 times more complex than the one I've got on this car and very different!

Lol.... you're welcome mate, that's the correct "system" for the car....it sounds like you've something a bit different on yours.....wonder if it's had one of those K&N filters on it..anyhow best of luck ....👍

After a bit more research it turns out that is indeed the case. Probably explains why the car gets a bit weaker when warm..

I wouldn't mind a K&N approach if it actually fitted correctly and wasn't right in a hot zone.

Sounds like that's gonna be the more favourable option Dan, I've seen pictures of Bis's with the K&N filters on, would have thought you Gould get one based on providing the carb type...good luck with it Dan, let me know how you get on....👍

Ta daa! Here's the finished article. In the end I scrapped the idea of a mid mounted air filter (for now) and bought a Ramflo filter instead. It didn't have a cut base plate so I had a local classic shop do that part for me. Once I'd finished with the various carb internals I took it outside and bam, the photos are the result for today.

I really like how it looks, obviously the screw through the top isn't ideal but it works and it looks relatively OE compared to say, SU carbs on an MGB. Once I've got the time I will think about building a converter plate. The awkward part is going from the very unique shape of the Weber 30 to a circular shape much more commonly found on pipes and things. I'm sceptical of the positioning of the filter still, being right above the exhaust, but we shall have to see how it fairs.
