going to post some pics in a sec.
bodywise, the car is very clean, although it looks like it had a respray at some stage.
that would be because i live in the driest country on earth and the country with the highest UV rating. basically the car runs well, but the comp is 75/85
so what needs doing?

mechanica
  • r/h front brake cylinder is binding - have ordered a full set of cylinders and new master from 126 fan, makes sense to do these as a set, as the pedal is spongy
    brake shoes worn unevenly - see above
    leak from front of gearbox - have ordered a set of seals (including the o-ring inside)
    new airfilter - the old one is filthy beyond belief
    small leak from side of carb - ordered a set of gaskets
    kingpins worn - ordered the kit
    reverse switch leaking
    gearlever spongy
body
  • mirrors - ordered
    side windows leaking ( opening type) - looks like the seals have had their day and are permamantely squashed
    ripped door seal

so the plan is
ENGINE
1. drop the engine/tranny for ease of working
2. rip the head off and get rebuild
3. replace the tube seals
4. check the surface of the cylinders. if ok, i'm going to leave alone,if not will do new rings
5. sandblast sheet metal and paint, they're in bad shape - no paint left at all. she must have run really hot
6. replace the inner gearbox seal and gearlever seals
7. put it all back
SUSP
1. Get the klingping re-done( although people tell me the 126fan ones are pre-reamed)

well here it is

disassembling

all the seals are stuffed - tube, lower gasket, rear main,etc , oil residue is all over

conrod breading almost worn through

pstonns ok, but looks like scuff marks on the side - is this common?


signs of leaks at flywheel - not sure if its the crank seal or the trans shaft
transmission cleaned up ok,

.. so that's how my mild refresh has tunred into a full rebuild

so the original plan is in motion
1. off to drop off the block for a dip and a head for a rebuild. alan will also do the measurements and let me know if i the cylinders need boring/honing and crank grinding
2. taking the sheetmetal to the sand balster
3. finalise the order from 126fan and wait 3 weeks

found a chain link in the sump ( one of the funny hook ones that are on the outside of the chain). is this a sign that the chain is about to go? it was quite loose - probably 10mm of play in the middle
the manual doesn't say anything about the required specs
and i can't find info on when these should be replaced. although the car is showing 65000ks, looks like it has had a very hard life.
i know in my bmw's, chains last 200k+, but this one looks quite skimpy
any suggestions?

The hook shaped bits on the outside of the timimg chain are self-tensioners. Sounds a bit dodgey if one has fallen off . Look inside the timing chain cover for signs of the chain touching the casting. If it is then you know it is shot.

Good luck with the project.. You are going to need it  :D My car was supposed to be ready spring 2012 but it wasn't  ???

It's very odd that these engines work still even though bearings and other things are not anymore at their best condition. Nice project though! Keep on sending us updates and pictures  :good:

Ok, now onto the g.box
wasn't hard to get apart, except that i had to buy 12mm alen key and a #4 impact driver. the only reason that i did is becuase the mechanic spotted a fragement of a bearing when he was changing the oil. so i figured easier to do it now


damage report
1. the mainshaft bearing has a busted race

2. i think these are the 1st gear - spots the small on the main shaft and the big one on the pinion shaft. if you look carefully, you can see the burn marke on the small gear and the rounded edges on the big one. all gears were fine, but a bit crunchy on the 1st and reverse


everything else looks OK
so to all the g.box experts
1. should i get a new mainshaft (80E from 126fan) and or not bother? looks like the edges of the teeth are meant to be round, not pointed, so not sure the wear i'm showing is a problem
2. should i change the rubber boots at the same time, they look in good nick?
obviously i'll get a new bearing

ok, first box has come in from 126 fan. happy with the service



back from sandbalster ( bargain at $80) decided to go with flame proof, given the heat generated in the bay

From what I read somewhere about 2100 , I have wrecked 3 and still got 1.
