Engine's out... now what?
Me_and_BIScuit:
I've been trying to fix an oil leak in my freshly imported Bis, with no skills and proper tools what so ever. Time has passed, and I got the engine out without losing any limbs and digits, lol.. a joy it wasn't for sure. And sure ebough, there is oil pooling in the bellhousing. Now I have a few questions: First, I happened to find out that there is way too much oil in the tank/sump (almost to the plug of the dipstick), Can this cause excess oil to land in the bellhousing, making it look as if it came from the camshaft? If the camshaft truly has leaked, can I replace the seal without taking the gearbox out and/or draining the oil from said gearbox? The teason I ask is because the engine is now perched up on some wood slats on my creeper and my back starts to hurt just at the thought of crouching under the car without it.
Guldbergdk:
Is it gear oil or engine oil? You can change the engine crankshaft bearing and seal without disassembling the engine. You just have to remove the flywheel
But why not go ahead and take it all apart:) I just finish a full restauration of a BIS engine, without any prior experience restoring engines. Its a pretty damn simple engine.
Me_and_BIScuit:
I might do that some time when I have the time/space/willpower to go into such great detail. For the time being, I'm mostly worried about getting the oil leak fixed and get this vehicle registered, everything else seems to work fine, so why try to fix what works? I might clean the oil flingamajigger and retighten the head bolts as this might hasn't been done in ages. By the way, how do I get this damn hollow screw out from the flywheel? It looks like I need some kind of special tool for this? Or magic? The shop manual doesn't seem to be very specific about it.
Guldbergdk:
Why do you want remove the hollow screw? Its just a “regular†bolt. You just have to undo the locking tap.
Remove the flywheel and check if there is play in the bearing. If so, change it. Othervise you can just change the oil seal.
If you are removing the oilfilter, flywheel, crankshaft bearing, carburettor etc. you are already halfway there to a full rebuild:)

Ok, I figured it out now.. I was looking at something entirely different.. applying hand palm to face now
