Post by: stuey on June 06, 2006, 09:15:32 PM
thought that would get your attention, Ive decided to give my collection of 80's bmx's a rest for a while and turn my attention back to my beloved puddle jumper... after 4 days knee deep in filler dust its nearly done( 2 more patches to rub down and 1 rear quarter and the roof to prime..

and well Im knackered!!! so im looking for a little feedback/ moral support -so check it out comments gratefully recived (be kind though its got to be flatted and primed yet before paint!!!

Thanks chris its going to be the original blue with all the chrome bumpers etc it should look cool... I want it understated so it doesnt look like much has been done on it (until you put it next to a standard one...)

should have it in paint within a few weeks all being well (IE no more BMX/expensive record purchases)

long time no post - during a very quiet night shift at work I spent a good few hours perusing the web for pics of cars to motivate me to get on with the fiat as it only needs 2 bits of welding, painting and putting back together the sh*t lowering out of it!

so I got the metal spitting b4stard I refer as a "welder" after several false starts manged to create a rather ugly weld on the 2 1/2 foot long crack in the front end of the car (the panel flanges where welded under neath+ welds dressed and primed after this shot... deffo more to come but its a start as they say.....really must get him back on the road...

Right got of my ass tonight after work and cleaned out the inside flatted and primed the roof and stone chipped the passenger side sill (progress pics tommorow when ive done more), Ill do the other one tommorow but its a chore to take it out of the drive cos I have to push it onto the road....

but question of the night is.......(any help would be good)

I'd like to spray the car myself (I used to restore cars but its been at lest 3 years since I last resprayed one) but I'm sure skills are there...

I have room in the garage as its quite a small car, I'm gonna spray in celly as this is only a temporary paint job as its got to have a few more radical body mods yet but I wanna get it respectable for its mot -so I'm doing it in the original fiat blue.

would it be cheaper to hire/ buy a compressor and do the work my self.. or farm it out to a bodyshop for a quick blow over?
Title: Stuey's 126-wheels centres arrived!
Post by: bis13 on August 02, 2007, 12:20:41 AM
if you do it yourself you know what youve done, a sprayshop wont like taking a pre prepped car as it takes the money out of it and the finish will be as good as the prep work and if you dont like the finished job its a headache for them they dont want. for what you want diy is they best option . you can buy one of those low pressure jobbies for about a ton and can spray your fences after!

hey there

the paint job you do can't be any worse than my mates mx5 which he paid £650 to get resprayed and they didn't remove any trim and didn't even fill teh trolly dings and a 5 inch long 10 mm deep dent the wing lol so good luck it will be at least better than wasting £650 on a paint jpb when u want a £2000 one

cheers Doug

500 mania do a cheap reverse eye , you may need to either use the proper mcpheresons to achieve a lower front or use the rear dampers as they are shorter but harder and if you havent done already shave those leafspring mounts . (500 mania is in links .)

thanks for the translation, may need the need the camber conversion to get it legal dave hove to you do it?...

however I decided remove 1 of the leaves from the front spring to lower the car and it appears to have worked, I can get it 1cm lower by cutting down the alloy isolater blocks between the body and the spring but I'm more or less happy with it now and it may settle abit yet.. anyway- picture for your delectation-  :)

lookin good mate.....there is a thread somplace about the neg camber thingy.....basicly take your top links, fill the excisting holes with weld etc, then make a simple jig and re drill 9mm i think it was further in,i went as close as i could to the bend in the link.......deasd easy, drops the front and gives better clearence for fat tyres,as the wheel is further in the arch, look in my garage section you can see the effects
Title: Stuey's 126-wheels centres arrived!
Post by: hudsonhenry on October 01, 2007, 05:45:10 PM
That looks great. How soft is the front end now with one of the leafs removed? you might find that it needs to be stiffer.

I have AVO's on my 500, for normal road use I only have them on two clicks which leaves plenty of adjustment.

When are you going into paint? I'm looking forward to seeing this one done.

Decided to do some work on the 126 today as I'm off the crutches and had some time to Kill,

Got it started thanks to a new battery and some petrol in the carb to move things along...

The I clearenced the front arches with my Knockometer to allow the front wheels to turn then I started wet flatting the primer down today ready for paint I'll post some progress pics up in a day or two maybe even get some paint on the panels too!!!!!!

I have a brand new set of spax adjustables I got for the Bis rear end which are real short and i mean real short in the body, they have pin tops and eye bottoms as per Bis rear arms and I have never used them as i went for Avo coilovers instead, so they are available

not much progress to show at the mo as I'm no one wants to see lots of pics of primer being rubbed down... but ive been playing with a steering wheel..... bought an old astrali steering for a tenner and a momo sized fiat 126 boss then adapted the two and used fibre glass resin to harden the rim section (ooer) then painted it- below are results awaiting laquer and possibly some gold metal flake and putting back the trims where the centre meets the rim for that moon steering wheel on a budget look-

tbh the vent previously went from the heater straight up to the vent so i removed it and small tube up to it and it now sucks in from inside the boot (wich i assume isnt airtight) not the best but I having to make some comprimises, I have seen a 126 with a small vent in the  wing to get around this which i may do later if i feel i need (i have a pics somewhere if i find it i'll dig it out) -but i have other plans which may negate the need for it yet....

as the originals had broken or entirely dissapeared one of the many more jobs I have to do to finish the car is-

BUMpstops

I bought a set of powerflex universal bumpstops for about £35 for the set of 4-they are smaller and a great deal stiffer than the originals and then fitted them -

the fronts where a simple bolt in affair-

the rears howevers required a captive bolt to be welded which in esscense is fine but the passenger side bumpstop is about 6 inches from the fuel tank (blue thing at the bottom of the following pic) so I covered the fuel tank in wet towels then put some steel in front to stop any fires (fire extinguisher was on hand too.. Im abit cautious after the last fire)-

and then could just bolt them in-

(Ive also got all the lights working and fitted the NOS window frames to the car and made a start on the door soleniods)

tomorrow If i can get  the suspension arms off I'm gonna finally dial in some negative camber into the front end!!!!

moving further with the "make it legal" quest tonight is the fog light, Ive removed the reversing light completely as its not required for the mot but the fog light is so ive fitted it to a metal plate to the back of a halfords special and  then sandwiched it between the body and the bumper so it can be quickly removed after the mot if i feel like it-

I wasnt intending on putting it back I kinda like the engine hanging out like that and Im hoping to fit a powerflow exhaust with a bike style can across the back of the car which should cover things nicely... appreciate you kind comments too!  :D

phil will be one of the first people I go and see- I think he's had a bad rap from the neighbours with all his cars at the mo, so a bit of 126-positivity will go a long way, and when you get your bits my garage is waiting fella..

Post by: stuey on June 02, 2008, 12:10:56 PM
its a central locking kit from ebay think it was about £20 I merely attached the solenoids to the wire for the interior door pulls- the trick is getting the tension correct - too much and the doors wont latch, not enough and the door wont open..

the boot one is very simple- just weld the bracket to the side of lock- drill a hole for the acuting rod though the top of the lock then just mount it wire it (sepreate switch or off the old wiper wiring like i did) hours work tops

if you guys want pics of what went where just ask and I will post some, Ive done all the hard stuff and made the mistakes ( 2 burnt out solenoids) so you dont have to!

sorry guys havent got around to the pics of the solenoids (tommorrow i promise) but i have been doing this-

On a recent (illicit) test drive I managed to smash the front wheel into the wing  >:(..

so to fix this issue and to give the stance a more consistant look I needed to dial in some negative camber at the front, the method has been done before but not really picture documented but it basically goes like this-

take a standard 126 top arm-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851188.jpg)
create a cardboard template to allow you to know the location of the original bolt centre -
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851189.jpg)
them measure over 9mm for the new one-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851192.jpg)
drill a guide hole using the template-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851193.jpg)
then weld up the old one and drill out the full size new one-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851194.jpg)
and fit to car-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851195.jpg)
here a pic of the side i hadnt done at that point for comparison-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851196.jpg)

heres a couple of the pics with both sides done-

Looks great, thanks for posting the pics, its really useful.  I may be thinking about doing this when i have the time.
By the way i didnt call because they had already done half the spraying on the mg when i got back from work!

Darrell:  did you go about the neg camber in the same way?  If so do you have the modded top arms spare as that would save me some time.

last few bits today and tomorow- did all the seam sealing and undersealing today then sorted the cathode tube for the numberplate light- i used some box section and welded some threaded round blocks to mount it to the bumper and incorperated the plate mounts to it as well-

I cut a hole to let the light out then simply slid the cathode tube up the box section et voila! (night time test was to satisfy me it was bright enough!

Funny thing was that the camber on mine went out alot after changing the king pins things.

I got some reconditioned ones from *a company near london that sells fiat spares beginning with R*

The camber change was dramatic but I drove it for a bit and the steering went quite a bit harder.

well failed the MOT today  >:(

mainly on the previously checked and working lights developing an earth problem and a mind of their own!

1 suspension nut loose ("I am a tosser")

and a hole I previously didnt spot!!!!

oh and he doesnt like the rear suspension set up so its back to the original rear springs for the MOT (hours work)

but... It did give the opportunity to drive it a bit more and I can report its better mannered than the beetle on the road and I f**king love it despite the mot failure retest next week and then shes gonna be out on the road!!!

I am so not giving up!!!

on the bright side i stopped of a mcdonalds and 3 people in the car park stopped and said how much they liked it!!!-obligatory post mot shot in the sun-

Car looks great, I would never of chosen the colour, but finished it really suits the car.

Shame she failed the MOT but it is always a gamble.

ha i dont know about a pulling car but they never fail to raise a smile, do you have the original wheels as if you mot with those on it tends to stop the testers being very critical around they clearances etc .  anyhow good luck with the retest .

Comarades.
I would agree with the 'pulling power' hypothesis.
Being married with kids, I have never had so much attention from the "Jack & Danny" since buying my 126 FSM. If I had known this during my foolish youth, I'd have had to beat them away with a shi*ty stick, after having invested my paper-round money in a 126.

got fed up of my exhaust vibrating itself to pieces so I decided to repair the threadless exhaust mounts-

Here it is  for all to see using novice vision to explain how its done-
first i removed the back panel of the car-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851397.jpg)
first we see the offending bolt holes that have no thread what so ever-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851398.jpg)
this is the helcoil kit from ebay (all you need for about £30 (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851399.jpg)delivered)
the holes are drilled then tapped (supplied in the box)-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851400.jpg)
then you insert the helicoil with the pushy tool-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851402.jpg)
after breaking off the 'tang' (the metal tab you screw the helicoil in with) you can then use you bolt holes again-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS851403.jpg)
sucess and easy to use the hardest part was getting the back panel on the car again after!

Stuey,

Re: door panels - some suggestions:

Re-trimming in vinyl (could do them plain or padded with some sculpted backing foam)

Or cover them in carbon effect film?

Or paint them?

Or get them powder coated?

Or get them polished?

Or anodised?

Or make them a brushed finish, then mask up and have a polished up logo on them (abarth scorpion?)

Or use them as a base and build up some pods for speakers etc with fibre glass then trim or spray with that weird flock stuff...

Or or or or .. dunno, run out of ideas now...

PS Stuey I am a fan of your project too

It'll be interesting to see how far you go with it.

Mine is a little similar but aircooled. I have widened the arches as it seems my wheels stick out more than yours.

Final touches to do and pray the paint job looks as good as yours.

I've gone for some slot mags I found on e bay, car will be red, lowered not as much as yours.

I go as far as I can squeexe money out of the monthly budget.

these ones should fit any fiat (and come up often on ebay) I fitted a nut in the hole where the locating lugs used to live  on the wheel then just bolted through using dome headed bolts (only 2 of the 4 on each wheel are actually functional... ) i can take a disassembled pic if you wish to show you how i did it...

I would have thought a paint stripper or get them bead blasted ?

disc brake conversion being started within days Im just waiting on a few sillies so Ive got all the bits before it starts he had been hiding from the cold weather for a month until yesterday so Ive only just retaxed him for the road... seemingly 1st gear has gone pop so there might be a gearbox replacement in the offing as well......dont worry theres lots coming up this project is far from finished...

Stuey, are you still thinking about possible engine choices - looks like scooby flat four could fit.  This pic is an early pushrod one, the OHC engine would of course be a fair bit wider.  People put them in beetles with some difficulty, and I guess a beetle bay is probably wider than a 126.

If you can learn to live without syncro then the 500 box is the strongest of all because of the straight cut gears and mated with a Bis diff could be interesting  [-/

Havent updated for a while so here goes, disc brake conversion is now laid out and ready to fit (hopefully next weekend I'll start it if I have the time.

whilst Ive been waiting ive been working on some bumper mods...
most people would be happy with nice shiny chrome bumpers on their Bis but it takes a special type of idiot to strip the chrome off and cut big holes in them.....

so i did-

heres my now chromeless bumper-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMGP0338.jpg)
the MK1 golf indicators Im going to mount flush inside it-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMGP0339.jpg)
heres a big hole cut-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMGP0341.jpg)
and after some tabs welded in and a test fitting of the indicator-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMGP0342.jpg)
it needs some fettling around the edges and Im going to carve the lenses to suit the curvature of the bumpers better but Im confident its going to look cool ..

more in the week if  I get time...
Title: Re: Stuey's 126-choppy choppy chop chop!
Post by: Gordan on March 14, 2009, 01:43:21 AM
Why oh why did you do that to your bumpers  :-X :-X
So whats the plan? Painting them in some colour or having them re-chromed?
Title: Re: Stuey's 126-choppy choppy chop chop!
Post by: stuey on March 14, 2009, 07:17:06 AM
lol I had a feeling this would be the response :D dont worry theres lots of fettling to do yet to get them fitting snugly and I intend on boxing the lights on the inside this was just the start Im also losing the bumper bolts once its all smooth the will receive a chroming.

end effect will be somit like this-(i cant do the indicators cos im crap with pshop)
and remember kids its only metal!!!

A little more fettling today managed to get the hole more flush to the indicator and loose the bumper bolts so then just the other indicator hole then lots of sanding filing etc and I think its gonna work.... </ (oh and loose the old indicators....looks a little silly with both...

What exactly does one need to make/do to fit the discs?

And i always take the engine off first, then the box, its just lighter, and me and my bro can take it off without any problems...
What exactly do you intend to do with the engine?

Keep it up fella  [-/
Title: Re: Stuey's 126-pulling it to bits!
Post by: stuey on April 04, 2009, 08:54:02 PM
the brake mechanism's are all cinquecento (disc pads calipers) the only special bits are the plates that bolt the caliper carriers to the car a set of spacers that got between the caliper carriers and the plates.

Im also using a set of cinq flexis connected to some longer relocated brake pipes and Im going to fit a bis valve to the rear brakes to ensure they dont pull up before the discs do...

Thes engine is just coming out for a freshen up clean and replacement of the gearbox which is knackered...

Hey Stuey, cars looking great and how are the Burners?  Just restored a MK1 Grifter and an old hawk blazer now the good weathers back, anyway enough of bikes I think there is another forum for those.....

What do you plan for your interior, carpets etc?  I ask because I am going to buy some carpet but not sure on the colour.

Cheers mate!

Hi fella -burners are doing well I have a 1979 rampar in the offing at the moment I'll try and bring one along to the 126 meet if it will fit as billing is a big place!

as for interior its going race inspired with a smooth metal dash, the the old trim holes welded and a few suprises thrown in for good measure.

todays progress was de-rusting the engine bay stone chipping and a fresh coat of paint (I have to chassis black the suspension parts and then it will look not too bad.....ready for the engine (painting that tommorow)

That's also quite a nice Basics folding workbench that your box is sitting on  ;) </4 </4

Very useful bit of kit and looks a lot like mine with all the paint.

On a more serious note it is interesting looking at the Bis box picture and spotting the bits that are the same as those on the early 500s which were a mid fifties design. It would be interesting to know which parts were carried through the whole range.

If you use disc-brakes, you have to fit another part to have a crispy breaking. My English might decrease with the technical terms, so: Sorry.
If you use the better effect of the disc-brakes, the leave spring tilts and twists in it's gum pillows. The wheels drift backwards, and the geometry is misplaced. It's like stepping into pudding.
I fixed a rod with two ball joints, one at each end, between the heart-pin of the leaf spring and the middle longitudinal beam. This prevents the leave spring from tilting, but allows it to do its job.
Hope, this was kind of understandable...

I don't know this anymore. The ball joint sits between the two holes in the frame. But i have to say, that this is a '73 and the newer ones have different shaped frames.

i've got a beautifull pic of a 126 undercarrage.

*fumbles through computer files*

aha, here we are. It's a newer one as the frame looks slightly different and has the plastic bumpers.

(http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/9294/126ppolskifiatonitsside.jpg)    right click + view image to enlarge

Looks like you could do the same, nothing some basic tools wouldnt sort.

as for the rod, i'm not sure but i'm pretty sure it'd be the same as anything else.

roobeh the pic you posted is also of a older aircooled, the plastic bumpers are the thinner type, not the newer bis ones, so its possible that this too is a 70s 126

;D Awe Shucks ! I thought the driver was just well hung
If you check out the 500 forum you will see guys there that have been running disc brake set ups  for longer than some of you guys have been born & without any catchy snatchy twiddley bits.
However if you are putting a few kegs more grunt into the pushing department , something way above a sports exhaust & a chrome rocker box cover then additional control may be useful . like the 850 which has a similar set up.

Rusty Rusty, what is it with you and pipe obsessions ???
I will be breaking my 125p soon(as the twinkie engine and the "Abarth" box in it is worth more than the car) Will try to give it a shot with the discs and calipers from the Polski.

Not a Webasto, did i say so? It's an Eberspächer. But i want to remove it, because i plan to install a 500 fueltank in the front, to extend the range. But i'm not yet sure how to connect the two fueltanks.

decided to sort out the welding for the mot today as i sick of coming home and seeing alan looking unhappy at the end of the drive , there was (or so I thought) a small hole that needed patching behind the passenger side sill sadly when i started diggin i found this-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS852377.jpg)
I made a patch for the front so-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/SS852379.jpg)
then one in at the back..

I have tacked them in place and will finish them tomorrow and post some "all done" pics, then he's all ready for its mot!

Congrats on your hard work, i know the feeling. I'm doing mine at the moment and have finished the bodywork about a month ago (same symptoms: sills and fenders + other holes here and there) and can hardly wait to get the paint job done and onto its wheels after being on blocks since May :)
Question: how strict is the MOT over there? Just that here from Jan 01 2010 if the car doesn't pass MOT first time round then it's taken immediately off the road (i.e. no number plate....)

I have a cell similar to this in my ute. Couple of things to watch out for. My cell is 55 ltrs and needed an external surge tank to stop fuel starvation when the level was low, even with the inbuilt pan for the fuel outlet/s as it appears yours has. Fuel tends to slosh about heaps in these tanks (no internal baffles) so foam filling it cured that. I also had to use one of the top outlets as a breather into a charcoal canister (rego laws).

Also, what are you going to do about a fuel gauge? My solution was to drill the tank to accept a "float level" style sender. I think there is better stuff out there now though.

Started fabricating patches for all the factory "holes" that won't be required in my smoothed new interior I started with all the round holes and had a little help from my girlfriend jewellery workshop with this disc cutter-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/a21f28af.jpg)
it has a set of holes running 2 plates you can hammer a set of punches through creating nice discs that I can weld into the interior.
More tomorrow!

I had a local firm make it for me in Hadleigh Essex/suffolk (not the one near southend) £250 but well worth it as it sounds great and a lifetime guarentee if checked every year at a registed garage....................go on you know you want to!!!

decided to do some inside stuff today - the dash...

here it is all hole tastic-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/976594ba.jpg)
I have welded up nearly all the holes (ran out of gas on my enormo bottle- time for a refill)
but what of that big hole in the centre you ask?
well you may note is nearly identical to a popular smartphone made by a company that sounds like "smapple"
plan is to use a gps app to give me a speedo and it will be linked to a hidden amp and speakers for tunes and a pikey digital dash so-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/bf4fba00.jpg)
i just need to resize the hole slighty....

I'll stick to the bmx's - although the offer is an interesting one I have bruised my pride way too many times on skateboards to want another.

thanks for the encouragement- i hope to have all the other holes filled on friday- then the weldathon becomes a grinder-thon  :(

progress has been slow of late due to a complete loss of mojo with the project but this last week I decided to try and soldier on- I have welded all the trim holes under the bonnet, reprofiled the lip on the front arches so I dont destroy another set of tyres and knot brush the floor.. mainly because my welder died(big job this- I have killed 3 brushes already! heres a few shiny metal pics...

I am totally embarrassed to say that I have a Mig welder and a hole in my floor about 4" square. I am avoiding welding the hole as I have never used a Mig welder (gas at school).

The car remains with no MOT as I am worried about 'melting the car'.

Dave if you bugger it up you just grind it down again and try again, get some practice metal and play with it until you feel confident, where is the hole? just make sure that you disconnect the battery, cover glass and anything you don t want burnt with spatter and get on with it and before you know it you will be on the road.

hiya Stuey!

Nice work.

I just did the first bit of work on my 126 for over 2 years.  The mrs is away so i spent the evening welding up the back end of one of the sills, not super pretty but it will do.  I think thats it welding wise to get a new MOT.  Just need a couple of other little bits and pieces doing (I hope) and will hit the road.

Then it will be time for fuel injection mk2........

Look cool the way they are, think they will suit the stripped out racer look you are going for, and the other bits I've seen, left the way are. Might be best to bolt em in and buy a cushion though.  :D

Right i have finally welded and cut holes in everything i ever wanted so I'm moving onto filling up said battle scars- starting with the front boot -

i have removed the fuse box and front brake reservoir, they will be relocated into the area behind the dash  and hidden by a hinged panel (seen here as a basic cardboard template) the spare wheel and air horns will still live under the bonnet and I'm considering putting the battery back in its original location as I'm a little nervous about having a battery and a fuel tank located behind the drivers seat, I'm starting to feel its asking for trouble- any hoo I've started to fill it and smacked a little primer to protect the metal whilst i crack on with the interior filling... more soon-

(what looks like seagull poop in the middle is some white primer showing through where i ran out and had to use black.... )

Stuey , like many others I am sure , we have followed your progress over the years and I am sure the car will be a stunner when you finish it. It would be a great day if we could see some of the "special" cars lined up at a meeting. Not just for our own enjoyment but the other enthusiasts at meetings like Retro Rides etc. There are some great original examples of the whole 126 range here in the UK then those like yours that you are stamping your own ideas on then there are the daily drivers like mine. But do not give up on the 704ccs bit. There are things you can do with the WC engine to get a bit more out of it so that could be your next phase  :)

Great stuff stu :D quick question on the rear calipers. I'm gonna be fitting some on mine soon but I'm stumped on how the handbrake cable is going to fit. How are you doing yours?
Title: Re: Stuey's 126-load the filler cannon!

The calipers I'm using are x19 rear calipers and have a hand brake mechanism- so it should be just matter of fudging the 126 cable to the calipers but to be honest I'll keep you posted!

More work today- I'm removing all of the suspension to go off to be powder coated got the rear off today I'll hopefully do the front stuff at the weekend-

Next I'll be getting the engine and box out and getting the car turned on its side so I can clean and paint the under side ready for all of the underpinnings and engine back in then it's going off to the spray shop for some love and paint- getting close now!

If you are going to turn your car on it's side to get at the underneath, I have a home made frame for turning cars up side down, like a spit on a BBQ. I am 30 miles away on the edge of Thetford if you have access to a small van or trailer you are welcome to borrow it.

I mean when you pressed brake pedal with 126 master cylinder, is the brakes works from middle when is pressed or just top of pedal? Just asking as going to fit to mine and not sure use 126 master cylinder or seicento one.

I'm assuming you Mean the pipe outlets? They are split - the middle 2 are for the front brakes and the front one goes to the rear to create a dual circuit system so in answer both of them!

Here's today's progress pedal box done with refurbed master cylinder. I'm using stainless nylock bolts throughout and I've started that here-

No I think he means the pedal action itself stu - does the pedal work at the top or because it has disc brakes does it work closer to the bottom as it has to fill a bigger caliper over the smaller wheel cylinders.

Sunrises I have front discs using punto mk2 calipers on mine and the pedal does travel longer before it works but when it does work it stops the car far faster than the standard drums did :)

Gadge Yes i am after action:)
What Do You think about seicento master cylinder?

Title: Re: Stuey's 126 little bits
Post by: Gadge on February 15, 2015, 10:16:15 AM
Well like I say I don't think it will be necessary to change as the normal setup works fine with front disc brakes. Also the seicento master cylinder has 2 outlets for the rear so you will need to make another line to one of the back brakes.

Great work stu! :D love the rear disc set up - I've had to abandon my conversion sadly as my adaptor plates only take the hard to find punto HGT calipers so will stick with the tried and tested drum set up but with larger rear wheel cylinders. How did you attach the handbrake cable?

a little more but mainly invisible work today first the F********* centre brake pipe (avoid at all costs if yours is servicable)
then the choke and shortened gearshift went in (with a crowbar)-so apart from the wiring for the switches and starter I dont have to take all this stuff off again, need my stainless gearknob to top it off though.

im going to finish the interior paint at the start of next week when im off work then get the engine back in and get all the wiring in and see if i can get it all started- once ive got a running driving car its off to a bodyshop (when i find someone) as my body guy has let me down too many times for me to even talk about it.

onwards and upwards! :D

thanks, Its one more thing off the list, Today I cabled up the clutch, re welded the accelerator pedal as it had snapped, put in the steering shaft and connected the wheel to the rack, just the wiring for the switches on the centre to do and connecting it all to the existing loom then I'm ready for exterior paint. I'm really pleased! (need to sort that steering wheel as well)

Hi Lucas I've had it for years and I don't even think the company that make it exists any more but it's just a alloy fuel cell so I'm sure you could get one that's very similar, you'd need to run an external fuel pump- I have a facet one I'm going to be using.

In this case I have to convert standart 126 fuel tank to take pump in...

Tons more wiring to arse around with but I've managed to do a few bits-
Fitted a battery connection and starter cable-
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/fiat%20126/BA3DB813-E32E-45CB-AD07-1D349F6A76D6.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/fiat%20126/BA3DB813-E32E-45CB-AD07-1D349F6A76D6.jpg.html)
A mounting for my dash tell lights which needs some finessing but goes in well-you can also see my abortive attempt to mount the lights in the dash which lead me to have to refill the dash and will have to paint it  >:(

Lastly I've put the tailgate latch pins in as I'm doing away with the solenoid mech as it was forever burning out-

Bloody hell.  Had my eye's peeled for one of those for ages, cant believe I missed it!!!

Anyway, a guy called Ben Edwards at Shock Tec www.shocktec.co.uk gave me a very reasonable price for shocks a couple of years back - they make shocks for Z-Cars, worth a shout (he might do a deal for shocks for 2 cars if you pursue it?).

Hi Stuey,

Did you buy any Coilover's?  Just wondered who you had gone with if you had.  I've bitten the bullet and ordered an Oscillating Arm from Fiat500Sport, looks like the same one, £250 with carriage so not badly priced.

Cheers, Ian

is it possible to buy just the base plate for the independent kit? or was that a one off you think?  :-X

You can buy the "base plate" separately, but it cost nearly 300 Euros.
 http://www.fiat500sport.com/sospensioni-anteriori-e-posteriori/tirante-per-fiat-500-126-in-alluminio-con-bracci-oscillanti-0474.html
Or the whole kit for 500 which probably makes more sense once you added everything up.

Stuey, the car is looking great! I like the clean look without the rear side vents 8)

I would have gone for the complete kit if this had not of turned up on eBay and I got it for £90 iirc so hopefully I can get some coilovers severally and that will still be a saving.

Gaz make the shocks though and there might be a group buy-

I've done a little work this week including fitting the plastic windows and engine intake tubing, front and rear lights, fitting in the iPhone for the digital dash set up, wrapping the exhaust and a few other bits, any here's some pics...

I've now had to order lots of stupid little bits to replace all of the stuff I've lost over the last 8 years...

so this appeared on ebay-

after I won it i realised it was on the other side of the country and it was pick up only- thankfully the seller has packaged it and its being picked up on saturday (lucky! :$)

all i need is some coilovers now....

is it possible to buy just the base plate for the independent kit? or was that a one off you think?  :-X

Stuey i'm now wondering if you could give me the measurements for this cross-member-ey thing? ive made the part in my CAD software but my measurements came from eye and a rushed 10 minutes laying under the car at college with a measuring tape...  ::)

if its not do-able then dont worry, i may rapid prototype my design out of plastic first to see how far out my dimensions are

You can buy them separately but you will need to buy a set of coilovers to go with it.

danny here the basic measurements between the holes in cm and the length of the arms to the bolt hole for the a arms if you need any thing else let me know-

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/fiat%20126/7AF1FB41-CE14-4BEA-A04C-8BEBE49CD857.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/fiat%20126/7AF1FB41-CE14-4BEA-A04C-8BEBE49CD857.jpg.html)

whilst waiting for the fuel system fitting and doing the wiring i decided to cut down my lip spoiler, I bought a mk golf (not gti) lip spoiler and cut 7 odd inches out of the middle, its currently drying in the garage after I glassed back in one piece...

I like your build mate. Looking good.

I just noticed the front cross member setup that you plan to run and cant help but think you will run into the same issue as i did where the calipers will hit the a arms when you turn the wheel.

If you want, have a look at what i have had to do to overcome the issue.

My page is:

https://www.facebook.com/FSM-NIKI-Project-1210331735674477/

I also have a thread on here warning about the issue.

Just on a side note, what wheel and tyre size are you running?
Title: Re: Stuey's 126 Lip spoiler fitted
Post by: stuey on January 17, 2017, 09:00:52 PM
Thanks for the info fat650 I haven't got round to fitting my new front end yet but if it's a problem at the moment ill know what to do. I have 13x5.5j with 175/60/13s but I will be running 13x6j I haven't decided on tyre size but it will be a lower profile that before as I want to increase clearance.
Title: Re: Stuey's 126 Lip spoiler fitted
Post by: Fat650 on January 18, 2017, 07:34:35 AM
Cool

what sort of offset are you running? And do you plan to run flares to accommodate the 6 inch wheels?
Title: Re: Stuey's 126 Lip spoiler fitted
Post by: stuey on January 18, 2017, 07:40:27 AM
I'd have to check the offset I can recall what it is- the arches have been rolled and the inner wells were clearenced slightly on the inside and welded up so theres no lip and a test fitting I did before paint showed they would fit with the old tyre size (only just!) so the slightly lower profile should make it all fit nicely.
Title: Re: Stuey's 126 Lip stainless exhaust fitted.
Post by: Fat650 on January 18, 2017, 08:08:29 AM
I'm sizing up a set of fiat 500 pop 14 inch steel wheels atm as its my only option and it seems the offset will need to be modified to clear my coilovers at the front and the a arms at the rear. I'm really keen to find out what sort of offset and max tyre width you can run in the standard guards.

I've read your thread but cant remember, do you have any engine swap plans?

Ill do some measuring when i get a chance. Im not swapping the engine but plan on beefing up the transmission and driveline then putting a small supercharger on it.

Not sure how you would beef up a 126 gearbox or why you would want too when Smallcox runs 100+ hp through a standard box with a 5th gear conversion  :)

Yes, yes, yes, that's all very well, and I agree the stance is superb, and do you think he's realised he's forgotten the door handles, and the front view does indeed look stunning, that I grant you, and the wheels are all right I suppose if you like that sort of thing, and rivetted rear side windows *are* a little bit different and certainly more secure at high speed, it's true, but for *goodness'* sake, never mind all this technical design flattery and stuff...

What I want to know is:

why is 'he' called Alan? ? ?

I've obviously had too sheltered a life as never heard of Alan, before, and now having watched a few samples I'm not sure I want to !  Seems a tad unfair to categorise the 126  along with that cartoon scribble though. The 126 may not conform, but he carries on regardless of the suburban norms around him rather than trying to destroy them. Still, there can't be too many 126s (or cars of *any* description!) around called 'Alan'  ;D

Title: Getting stuff done!
Post by: stuey on August 10, 2018, 08:55:56 AM
I'm trying to get into the garage every day when I'm not on shift and get some stuff done now until the car is finished (its only been off the road 9 years!) this week-

Plumbed up the brakes and master cylinder reservoir
Nearly finished the fuel plumbing (awaiting one an6 to 15mm fitting)
Replaced the track rod ends (because they were too long and I lost the nuts so it was easier to replace them as nothing I had fitted them)
Attempted to get the engine to fire but its refusing (no spark) so I replaced the coil) which didn't work so I'm waiting on some new points now!

Next week-
wire up the handbrake warning light and other lights for the dash
fill and bleed the brakes
hopefully fire the engine
fit new drive shaft gaiters on the gear
and other stuff..

no pictures but more updates soon- its about time he left the garage!

]So great news! after nine years the engine was fired up for the first time in a long time, so to celebrate I decided to fabricates some alloy finishing panels to complete the interior heres some pics!
first it necessitated getting this bad boy out-

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMG_0452.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/IMG_0452.jpg.html)

I made some cardboard templates-

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMG_0450.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/IMG_0450.jpg.html)

first was a cover panel for the electrics and brake filler-

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMG_0454.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/IMG_0454.jpg.html)

then I made a filler panel for the boot lid-

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMG_0453.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/IMG_0453.jpg.html)

next i will make a under dash panel then they will all be bead rolled for strength and powdercoated semi gloss black.

this week I want to get the brakes bled and finish plumbing the fuel system, and then get the driveshaft seals fixed.

getting there!

That's looking great, should be on the road soon then. Finally got mine back on the road last week, still on standard front suspension. Have purchased front coilovers from Gaz, I just need to sort out the wishbones.

Appreciate you saying that!- every time i get closer I find a dozen other things I'm not happy with but i figure if I just keep pushing at some point ill get a fully working car- quite honestly I'd rather skip all the fancy stuff and just have a working 126 right now- but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end!!!

I still had hair and didn’t have a belly when you started this
I’m still following the build.
It can’t be much longer. It’s looking good.

Cheers guys Im really trying hard to get it done- its been way too long!!!!

this week I replaced the front braided hoses as the old ones were crap! -
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cheekos10/IMG_0475.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/cheekos10/media/IMG_0475.jpg.html)
filled the system-

I tried to bleed the brakes and the front circuit wouldnt play ball, i removed master cylinder and fiddled with it and managed to getting pumping fluid so I put it back on the car and in the process buggered one of the threads for the pipes so now have to wait for a new master cylinder to arrive  more to come soon!
