An amazingly successful car and it must be Fiat's longest running model. Though if you include licenses like SEAT and Zastava then the superb Fiat 600 is an equal: 1955-81.

All fade into insignificance compared to the VW Beetle which was in production for over 65 years,  and the VW T2 which started out in 1950 and is still in production - both immediately recognisable as the same (though greatly improved) vehicles as their original prototypes which is more than can be said for most namesakes.

Also the 2CV deserves a mention at over 50 years production.

Mmmmm. Aircoolers seem pretty durable...

Remember the last ones were made in 2000 thats 27-28 years. I wonder if the Smart will still be being made in 30 years time

couple more, the morris oxford made back in the 50s carried on till the 21st century in India, also the Hillman Hunter is still made in Iran, that dates from mid 60s, lastly, the humble Vespa PX range, introduced in 1977 and still going strong worldwide virtually identical too!

i dont understand this rivalry 126 lovers seem to have with the smart car. it seems such a random car to compare to.

i will go off and hide in a corner Paul, ive been proved wrong

i forgot about Seat producing fiats under license.

I think smart cars are fabulously made after all they are Mercs arnt they?, just ashame they are not 2 + 2,

Bruce put together a great diagram of 126 v Smart. It showed the many a dvantaes of a 126 BIS compared iwth a smart even today.

Smarts are so well made that their stupid little engines last 60,000 miles then go pop... nasty orrid little things, trust me Chris
It really is amazing that a car like the 126 which is essentially a 1950s design mechanically lasted so long, however if it werent for the commies ruining eastern europes economy I dont expect it would have lasted as long. Its a real shame that the 300,000 or so Poles who now live here havent brought 126s with them, that would be so cool

i didnt know smart engines were crap, i havnt heard many good things about them, ive heard they are stopping production.

simplicity works well, thats why they can go on forever i suppose if well maintained.

i saw a running aircooled the other day 75k miles!! it had on the clock orginal engine and king pins!!

smarts are pretty cool really - its a shame it never really took off.

the fact is in 30 years there will be some smarts around, of course there will. but they never had the production figures of the 126.

your right though chris - simplicity works - we wanna see more air coold engines

SMART was a great idea, but the reality was very underwhelming. I remember when the SMART car was first announced - it was going to be the eco-friendly young persons super-cheap hybrid car made by Swatch. The end result as a very expensive (for its size/technology) car running on very bog-standard technology. Its real-world MPG is about that of my 500 (I've seen 48mpg quoted a lot), and about the same as a new Panda which is twice the size (car and engine). So aside from its small size, it was a quite pointless car in the end, when it promised so much at concept stage. In eco-terms, every car now built in europe has to be largely recyclable.
What it did achieve was a big statement about what kind of car is possible for a city - but sadly (I think anyway) micro-cars are loosing the battle against ever bigger 4x4 tractors. I'm equally disappointed with what I've seen of the new 500 (a squat Fiat Panda) - it was probably an even bigger opportunity to put an innovative micro-car back on the map, but now seems to be yet another so-so, buy-one-for-your-wife/daughter Ka. can't see the new 500 lasting 30 years either. Fiat have lost their innovation and daring.

agree that Fiat are no longer innovative and daring... but thats for one simple reason; by and large the human race has become boring and dull, they want boring cars to drive to their boring towns that now all look the same, to shop in dull stores that sell dull products... what we need is some mad people back in power to liven things up a bit. I thought the 90s were dull, but so far the 21st century is a real snooze, apart from us retro people that keep everything worthwhile... thats better

Yep, despite all hell breaking loose all around us, the West is becoming an off-the-shelf, pre-packed, down-loaded, pre-recorded, made-in-China, Windows-compatible, as-seen-on-CCTV, buy-now-pay-later Dullsville. Guess that's why zipping around in 30 year old aircooled rollerskate has an attraction. :)
