Ive adapted a spare Bis distributor too take the electronic ignition from the air cooled.
Ive not fitted it as yet, i plan too once my garage is up and finished. Its probably going too be after well after the new year before i fit it though :(

Great work! This is something I really want to do to mine. How was it installed? You must let us know how you get on! :)
-
I pulled the dizzy too bits and under the bottom plate there are slots where the threads that hold the points too the top plate are.
I used one of the standard original holes for one side but i drilled it and used a machine thread screw and nut,the other hole never lined up where i wanted it so drilled another in the right place and used a machine thread and nut again.
The heads of the machine bolts i used were small but the heads sit in the slot on the base plate (i put them in from the bottom) so for the new hole i drilled i had too in large the ready made slot in the base place too allow the advance too work :)
-
I'd be interested in buying a full kit off who ever can make them!!
-
Could you give me a list or parts needed to convert a dizzy and maybe some links? I will have someone make it up for me. Cheers
-
Ive converted the dizzy but ive not fitted it to test it as yet because the cars in use and i tore down my old garage to build a new one and since then the weathers not been on my side either
Once i know it works i would be happy to show you how i did it and what bits i used :)
-
Ok thanks.. 👍🏻
-
Also interested in this myself if you get chance to post more information
-
Yes no problem.
The fiat can have a little break while the gritters are on the roads and i wont be using it everyday now so on a warmish dry day i will fit it and once i know it works i will post up how i did it :good:
-
Brilliant thanks
One question is it a AccuSpark unit ?
-
Yes it is :)
-
Cheers
I have looked at the AccuSpark unit and they sound very good but I cannot for the life in me get my head round how you time it up initially without the points to open or close
I understand that it will need to be set with a timing light once running
-
If you get someone to crank the engine while you swing the dist' until it fires and go from there with the timing gun :D
-
Gutted
I thought i would fit the kit before work today and in rushing to try and finish it i had the wires connected the wrong way and i think ive fried the AccuSpark unit :rant
it was sparking when i tried it but i could not get it to fire, i thought i just had the timing wrong so kept trying.
Now i have no spark and thats when i realized i had the wires wrong.
So pi***d off with myself now :(
-
:( Not good news but it happens to the best of us at times, put it down to experience and get another unit
I fried a £750 ECU on a de-icer last week :o

:( Not good news but it happens to the best of us at times, put it down to experience and get another unit
I wouldn't claim to be among the best of us, but I'm certainly in the 'been there, done that' category - fried an electronic battery charger (brand new, naturally - no point doing it on an old one!) by the simple expedient of plugging it in and carelessly letting the two crocodile clips touch each other.
Also some years ago cooked an alternator - again, brand new, only supplied by the garage about an hour earlier as a recon unit - by getting the wires the wrong way round.
Ah, happy days...
You youngsters can of course put it down to your lack of experience and youthful eagerness to get on with the job. When you get to my age, such rationale is denied... all that's left are 'senior moments'.... It's not a pretty sight :$
-
Oh no! :( I agree with the previous statements in that we've all been there before (mine was a car stereo) but don't let it stop you! Annoying as it is you must persevere with it. I'm seriously thinking of it myself and learnt a lot from this thread and now I know it's deadly important to wire it up correctly so chin up and keep going! :D

Oww, and i thought me frying £40 was bad .
Cheers for the encouragement to carry on with it :)
Im just annoyed that i never checked the wires when i was trying to start it but ive come to accept i made a mistake and i will get another im softening up the wife ready for the news as i type haha :P
On the plus side it was sparking and tried to start so it should work so this next time it all will be good :good:
-
:D :D Good news boys the AccuSpark unit works
I drilled and tapped two 3mm holes in the original distributor baseplate to mount the unit.
I then used the screws that mounted the unit to the AccuSpark supplied baseplate
Time taken approx 1 hour from removing distributor to running
It has helped with the misfire I had at mid throttle but now it seems to be bogging down if I snap the throttle open
I can watch the advance and retard working along with the bob weights opening so it looks like the carb needs to come off again
-
Nice, glad to hear it works :wave, wish mine did lol
Can you confirm that this diagram is right then please and that no.3 is the - and no.4 is the +
and i that this is as you look at it form behind the car.
I want to make sure im right this next time :good:
-
Yes the wiring diagram is correct and that is looking from rear of car forward
Negative on the left of the coil
Positive on the right of coil
I took my ignition feed for the unit from the spare positive terminal on the coil if that helps
-
Thanks :good:, i've just ordered a new one and i will be check and double checking i have it wired the right way around this time....doh lol.
-
Where did you two buy your accusparks from?
-
Ebay

-
As above, i bought mine from the same seller :D
-
One thing I have noticed over the years is that once you let the magic smoke out of anything electronic you cannot recapture it and make it work again :D :D
-
It's very tempting, and at £40 you can't really go wrong.
I might wait until you both have fully tested them to confirm if the adverts bold claims are true of "easier starting, smoother idling, better performance and MPG.
Promising though. :)

This made me laugh :D and also very true haha.
-
Well unit no.2 has arrived, i will fit it the weekend when i have more time to make sure its right this time lol

Good luck
Red to Red
Black to Black
Blue to bits
:D
-
Its running :wave
Been out around the village in it and i can safely say it's made a big difference to the running, it's a lot smoother and the tick over is very steady.

-
Nice
Glad you got it sorted
-
Very happy with the results :)
When i was reading the instructions it says about using the thermal paste but if it comes on a base plate you don't need to but as i was removing it from the supplied plate to the bis one i put some thermal paste under it first :)
-
Fantastic work! Well done :thumbup
-
Well done Dave! I might have ago on mine ;D
-
That does look good, I think I'm convinced!
I can't believe how fast it starts, about 2 seconds?
Mines about 90 seconds of cranking on a cold morning.
-
Got to agree with Dave the units are very good and easy to fit
-
I have bought a few of these units as the shop is just down the road from me. Same price a ebay though. The shop owner told me that He often has an ebay sale on Sundays only just to boost sales so keep an eye on them :)
-
Iv got mine now so need to get the dizzy out and figure out how to put it together, do you need to replace any other parts?? Coil maybe?
-
Hi Rickys1121
No you don't need to replace the coil
If you are fitting the unit to a Bis distributor you need to remove the pickup from the baseplate it was supplied with
I removed my distributor and stripped out the baseplate and drilled and tapped two 3mm holes for mounting the pickup , you will need to put some thermal paste under the pickup available from RS Components which helps to dissipate the heat generated
You can pick up your positive feed for the unit from the spare positive terminal on your coil
Whatever you do make sure you connect it up correctly
All in took me about a hour from removing distributor to back up and running
I think I have a couple of pictures I will post up for you
-
Thanks Iv got a friend who's a mechanic so I will let him read through this and see if he will do it for me. Iv never been good with electrics so want to make sure it's done rite..
Thanks a lot!
-
Here you go
The two black marks on the rotor are the points were the magnets are mounted to trigger the unit, it made it a lot easier when timing her back up to know roughly where it should be firing

Do you need to still use a condenser?
-
No it does away with Condensor
-
Has anyone whos done this mod noticed if its made any difference too cold starts?
From cold now all i have to do is pump the throttle twice, give it full choke and turn the key and it starts lovley :)

Nanoplex Kit for all 126
-
Hi guys I'm in need of help. I've had a bash at installing electronic ignition on my bis and I can't seem to get it to fire up. The kit I've bought is a power spark one which is a carbon copy of the accuspark one. I've fitted in an old Zelmot distributor and positioned the cam so the the magnet is just about to pass the trigger and and come to connect up the wires and here's where I'm getting confused. Can I use the old positive wire that feeds the distributor or do I need to go directly to the coil? Also on the negative side one I've connected to it do I remove the wire that's already on it??
Incidentally I've timed it so the cam starts to pass on 10 degrees btdc
-
Well it would appear that I too have fried the trigger module :( the price doesn't matter too much but I'm really bummed out about it as I don't know what's gone wrong. As far as I know it was wired up correctly with the red wire going to + and the black wire - and at one point while holding a old spark plug against the engine whilst turning the distributor it was producing a spark but after getting the wife to crank the car over and not firing it's now not producing one :( the car has been on charge all night so I know it's not the battery so my venture into electronic ignition is now over ....... Back to points for me
-
Only just seen this or i would have posted earlier bud.
This is how i have mine wired up.
1: electronic ignition positive
2: electronic ignition negative
The other wires are the originals apart from the blue one, thats for my rev counter.
The one thats not connected was the original wire going to the distributor that i left in place incase i ever need to go back to the old dizzy with the points in as i carry it with me in the boot :)

-
Ahhh I see yes I've definitely wired mine differently. Here's mine. The blue wire is from the negative side of the distributor and I used the old positive feed for the live and as you can see I do didn't remove any of the old terminals. Still can't see how this has fried the trigger as it would still brake the signal to the coil :(
