You can reverse the starer but it too difficult. Fitting the scuby starter isn't difficult, all you need to do is make an adapter plate and make the access slot in the side of the bellhousing a bit larger to take the larger diameter scuby starter.

What about fitting the scooby engine, gearbox and starter? Would that be easier than making an adaptor plate for the 126 gearbox

I believe this would be the best option, but you need to reverse the rotation of the gearbox output shafts. This can be done with a crown wheel and pinion kit from scubygears in Australia, can't find an importer in Britain. I believe the kit costs around £1000+. Others have turned gearboxes upside down to reverse the output shafts, I read somewhere that this was not an option with the scuby gearbox. Therefore I have opted for the cheaper option to fabricate an adapter plate. If funds become available I would like to buy the conversion kit.

Hi all, just received a scuby starter, second hand from ebay, and it works.  The problem now is the dog gear is the wrong pitch.  I am now trying to graft the dog126 drive clutch onto the scuby.  An alternative is to fit the scuby flywheel and try to find a friction plate with a similar diameter that fits the 126 spline or fit the scuby ring gear to the 126 flywheel.

Or, take the 'dog gear' off the 126 starter and fit that to the scooby motor some how maybe?

Dom the pitch of the ring gear on the scuby is greater than the 126.  I have looked at grafting the dog gear from the 126 to the scuby but will need to check the clutch mechanism to see if this is possible, even if it is possible I will have to reduce the diameter of the armature shaft to suit the 126. I suppose the ring gear from the scuby could be fitted to the 126 flywheel by shrinking on a steel ring to suit the scuby ring gear. So might take a bit longer to complete the first stage of the conversion.

When I contacted Scars they said the kit would cost £2000 plus and they would need the car and scuby engine and part of the kit was a specially built starter. I also tried to make contact with Alistair down in OZ, he has build photos on Nigels 'Retro 500 site' but he has not divulged what started motor he eventually adopted, he also tried the 126 starter and found it not powerful enough to turn the scuby. The search goes on when I resolve the problem I will post how and what I used.

It is the 1.8 out of the pickup, normally aspirated EA81.

Just spent all morning at a starter motor specialist, very helpful guy, he went back and forth looking for starters to try against my flywheel. Found a vw starter hot of a polo that meshed OK but it would be difficult to fit, large sections of the bell housing would have to be removed and special adapter and distance pieces made.  Eventually we found a starter from an old rover 820 auto, I was told it was an anti clock starter Iwill check it all out tomorrow.
