Engine cutting out.
« on: September 20, 2019, 06:22:45 PM »
Hello, I'm 18 years old and have recently bought a Fiat 126. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the car or a problem on my part. I start the car up using the choke and the starter lever but after probably half a mile down the road it cuts out. After some time I can start it up again and it works fine after that without cutting out. Please can any of you tell me why this is happening?

Hi Ellis. I'm sure some of the guys will be along shortly to help.
I'm guessing that's an air-cooled, not a Bis?
Does it start quite quickly, no issues?

Hi Dan, yes it is an air-cooled engine. It does start quite quickly but I don't think I have quite mastered using the choke and the starter lever....do you think you can give me some simple instructions on how to use it? I'm not always sure how much choke I need.

Mine is a little slow starting, so full choke to begin with. The engine note picks up a little once warm, so I'll turn if fully off before driving. Takes a minute or two.
If yours is cutting out with the choke off, you can try adjusting either the throttle and/or idle screw on the carb.
