there has been a lot of discussion about what oil to use in the 126 motor,aircooled in particuler,i've always been an advocate of 20/50 duckhams,which i still use in the standerd motor of buzz2,but after a long discussion with the guys at the local oil store,i think im going to go down the 10/40 semi synth route for my new engine builed due to higher RPM/heat issues..........any thoughts/comments most welcome

Though this is not really conclusive or anything, just an observation I have made from my engine, when I have used 10/40 or 15/40 semi synth, the car has seemed absolutely fine.
A few months back, I changed to some 20/50 stuff and after quite a few miles under some high revs, the oil light began to come on.
At first I thought it was a more serious problem, but after draining the oil and putting 10/40 back in, the light no longer comes on.
So am assuming that maybe the 20/50 mineral oil could have become less viscose under such repeated heat?

Remember, this is merely a one off observation I noticed, and could easily be just a matter of coincidense or stupidity...

mmnn,20/50 should be more than ok in a standard engine.....im just thinking for my new one,completly clean and rebuilt if i should go down the synth route.....

the standard oil seals are just not designed to take an oil as thin as that, not only are they not very effecive in the first place then youve got to think about their age, im sure it will piss out eventually with the high revs. With classic oil youve got an oil seal swell in it too.

the amount of people i speak to with oily clutches (from gearbox oil seal and flywheel main bearing seal) happened to my BIS engine.

Also its crucial to get the right amount of oil in, i was getting loads of fuel in the oil, which meant the sump was over full all the time, im convinced that this caused too much pressure and blew the oil seal behind the flywheel.

i just think its best to stick with what you know works well dave, youve been using 20/50 and buzbomb 1 ran nicely on it, at high revs.

good point chris,but all my seals/gaskets etc are new,including gearbox....after full rebuiled....and i do agree, a good quality 20/50 is the business.....i wonder what the 58bhp polish 126's use?........



and what about using castrol racing R oil????.....lovely aroma  :P

haha yes i remember you tol me a while back about castrol racing oil and its smell, someone else i know used to use it he said the same. If im not mistaken he said they used it in their 2stroke bikes, to give off the smell.

i think you'll be fine if its got new seals, but like you say i'd love to know what oil those racing 126's from poland use.

Ive always used a decent 15/40 enhanced mineral oil with no problems.
The cars been using a bit more oil of late so I stuck some Wynns oil treatment in (its bloomin glue I think) and thats cured that!
1987 Fiat 126 FSM, alloys, clear lights, Polish tat accessories... love it!

i use mobil 1 15w50 synthetic, i have used this oil in my old chrysler with 110k for the last 10 years.
when i did the head gasket i flushed the oil and replaced it with mobile 1.  synthetic oils don't break down at high temperatures and we all know how hot the aircooled and bis engine gets, it also helps to disapate the heat more quickly than a mineral oil and are very stable at low temp's, so my view is to go with modern technology. only time will tell.

My opinion for what its worth......

I would stick with a good quality mineral oil and do regular changes. I used 15/40 Castrol Magnatec in my aircooled.

My friend Tom has a very expensive full steel Gozzoli 780 engine is his 500 (he is on the retro500.com site), he ran it on Mobile1 when he first got it but seized it on its first long trip. He has used Magnatec since and had no problems despite doing losts of trips across the UK, Italy and Holland.

Forgot to say....

Running in oil.....

Will a high tec modern synthetic allow the engine to bed in properly or will you have to extend the running in period by a large margin?

Back in the day we would use a running in oil then switch to a higher grade once the car was run in, is this still worth doing?

this engine is basically a dinosaur and i think your old school method would apply . running in oil is a good idea if you are going to use a traditional type oil . however all oils are now synthetic anyhow i forget where but i read it in an article it might have even been on here...
