Registering Fiat 126 and keeping original number plates
« on: April 03, 2020, 06:15:53 PM »
Dear All
Couple of months ago I brought a Fiat from Poland and I would like to register it at DVLA but I really want to keep my Polish black number plates. Those are the old style plates and they very much make up the look and feel of the car. It's a 1983 model.
Does anyone know if it's even possible?

Also, how difficult is it to register it as a classic car?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Piotr

You can t keep original plates. You could use them on car at a show. You need to nova  cert go to gov. Net. Nova you need mot on chassis number insured the same nova cert etc to reg but ask for age related number

Just to clarify what Shielsy is saying, you can keep the actual metal plates you just can't use them legally.
I keep my original Polish plate on the back shelf, so that people can see where it came from.  But have legal UK plates on the car.

There is a V652 form that comes in the dvsa import pack.

It's for keeping the original plates but you need it to be signed off by a member of an approved owners club for them to say that the plates are originally for that car?

That was the sticking point for me when I tried to do it, the people i emailed from the owners club (can't remember which one) couldn't wrap their heads round the concept as they hadn't heard of the form before

No I couldn't get the fiat club guy to listen to what i was saying

He kept saying i didn't need him to sign off for the car to be imported

It was very frustrating.

I made a certified copy of the original polish documents in case i want to try it again in the future

Foreign cars that have been in Britain for more than six months in a year must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and fitted with UK plates. If the owner is judged to be a resident, they must register their car within two weeks of importing it.
