Reverse gear gone missing
« on: April 10, 2019, 11:15:05 PM »
I genuinely cannot find it... replaced the gearbox the other day, its not like i can sometimes engage it, its basically impossible to do it, ive tried countlesss times the past few days and ive only managed to get into reverse twice i think...

What can i try to get this sorted?

New flexible linkage and new (to the car) gearbox

Any advice would be greatly appreciated  ;D

On the odd occasion that has happened to me (once when driving a classic Fiat 500 at my wedding!) the short term fix has been to place it in neutral and then run through each of the gears a few times which seems to reset it. Longer term, changing the gear selector bush can make a big difference. The original ones were plastic and can disintegrate, you can buy longer lasting rubber ones for a few pounds and they make a big difference.

Unfortunately, yes, but only after i realised reverse was impossible to get into!
1st,2nd and 4th are fine 3rd can grind sometimes when selecting, only other issue is going from 4th to 2nd can be difficult to engage.

And Bar, thanks for the ideas, i will have a look for a replacement gear selector bush and attempt to put the gear stick adjustment back to stock as  best i can...

Jheeez i hope not  :o

I did have a look and it all appeared fine at the time, so i dont think its anything too serious... but having said that i just do not know what it is!

Ive bought that selector bush but now ive noticed theres a rubber tube around the selector, so i velieve i should take that off as i dont think its standard?!  ::)

I disconnected the flexible connector from the gearstick side and manually shifted into gear using the direct input into the gearbox itself, i got reverse and it works fine, so now i know its just adjustments to be made to the selector.

Still believe this rubbed tube around the selector shaft is not standard so am going to take it off.
Here’s to no regrets...
