2 cylinder engine wears qucker than 4 cylinder
« on: November 14, 2006, 12:03:59 AM »
Does a two cylinder engine wear out quicker than a four cylinder engine of the same capacity because two cylinders have to do double the work of four cylinders ?. If this is so it means that if a 126 owner proudly claims that his car has only done 25000 miles in reality it has done 50000 miles.

yes you are correct .  but if  a engine has done 25k its 25k . you forget that the design of 2 4 6 8 0r 12 cylinders allows for these things also the more cylinders the bigger the engine .....

not nessessarilly true, i have worked on 4 cylinder engines as big as a small house and they come bigger. also Honda built a 500cc six and Guzzi a 500cc V8, somebody even made a miniture Ferarri with a working Flat 12.

generally more cylinders bring more power, but increased complexity.

That is completely untrue, in fact the 126 lump revs very low and isnt really stressed at all! Doesnt matter how many pistons you have they all wear pretty much the same

This is a question i often sit thinking about, i think that yes 2 cylinders have to work harder but i dont think it means they wear out quicker. Proven by many 126's that have done 100k+ many 4 cylinder engine have never seen. (all depends on oil change and how they are driven)

im thinking about putting this v8 into my 126 :D

complete nonsence.its all about maintenence and usage.......what is a fact tho,is that a badly maintained 126/500 motor will eventualy fail to start at all....(and save its own life, unless scrapped by a twat owner)while the 4/6/8/12 cylinder will find at least 1 or 2 plugs will fire and start the car....think about it,a miss fire on a 126 is 50% power loss.on a V8?,you prob wont notce,on a V12.almost impossible to feel........and a miss fire on a single????.........................

I personally think it's down to improved engine design and lubrication advancements that we now see these high mileage motors around.

Back in the 70's and pre 70’s (which is 500 & 126 design era) it was very unusual for any motor to reach 100k

As mentione above its Rev's thats causing wear.

If your engine revs to 18,000rpm then it will almost certainly wear quicker than one revvin to only 5500rpm.  The lubricants have to work harder and sometimes become less effective and something spinning/scraping/opening/closing at higher rpm's will wear more and be more prone to stress failure.

So NO a 2cyl engine does not wear more than a 4 cyl for the same conditions.

Anyway, its proven that most engine wear occurs at startup, due to the lubricants having drained away from where they are needed the initial few revolutions can cause the same amount of 'wear' to engine internals asa many thousands of miles of use at proper operating temp etc.
